EDIT: Going by Ficheall's post below, candidates talking about their policies won't be allowed until closer to the elections.

Until then this thread will serve as a general discussion of the election and what people would like to see in candidate's policies etc.

There will be no talk of specific candidates until they have been announced, whenever that is. Canvassing by those candidates will not be permitted. Until such time as canvassing is allowed, specific candidates' policies can't be discussed (given that this applies everywhere, not just boards, they shouldn't exist anyway).

In response to the other thread, I find it interesting that apparently Sean Burke & Paul Curley seemingly are the front runners according to the op there. In relations to politics, I think honesty is important. They both seem to be liked by the right people hence all the publicity given by friends like the op.

The A & F as has been much discussed have gave many false claims such as the biggest events malarky and the discount card scam. Now he also seems to be running his own events...

Biz Soc. I have seen have been claiming that they sold out in 28 mins or something for the Commerce Ball when they never sold out full stop last year. They also say the Ball is all for raising money for charity this year which it clearly is not, especially when they are spending 15k on an act. I see the Arts Ball is aiming to raise 11k (Though seems a bit optimistic), I doubt Biz Soc. will raise much.. if even break even.

Also, Why are they running for SU president in the 1st place? Surely it's the same reason why they aren't running for Vice President etc. which would be the more sensible option.

Out of these two I would vote for Paul Curley, but there does seem to be a lack of good candidates for these elections. Emmett Connolly does seem a nice fella and intelligent, but I see some people have a dislike for him.

I didn't get the impression that the OP there was friends with Sean.

This is a valid point - no offence to incumbent and previous presidents, but the two VP offices seem to be more beneficial to students, even if each case is on an individual basis.

The Presidents Post does seem to appeal more to those more interested in their own careers, which could be the same point about the Commerce Ball which did not need a 15k unknown english act and which could have given that money to charity or the student assistance fund. Those with genuine interest for the student body run for welfare officer etc. like Emma Conway.

Not many people could hold a candle to Emma though. You're going to have to lower your standards and expectations, I'm afraid.

Just read the other post there.

Very easy to figure out who it was, and ridiculously uninformed as usual.

Doesn't even merit a proper response.

Okay, if everyone could read the first post, i'm sure we'll have no hassle on this thread. I'll update it as necessary when more details are available :)

Has Sean Burke declared that he is running for election, or is this nlyo a presumption made by the fact that he recently resigned from the A&F society?

Lads, you're not allowed to declare that you're running yet.

    From last year's: http://www.su.nuigalway.ie/site/view/149/
    4. Candidates and their election teams are not permitted to canvass (through manifestos, posters, flyers, websites or in person) before 12:01am on Monday 7th March 2011 (sabbatical elections) or Monday 21st March 2011 (part-time elections).

Something I was going to bring up, but surely the anonymity on here should cover that, no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,034 ✭✭✭Ficheall

Not really anonymous - it doesn't take much effort to work out who you or Robmeister are. No offense.

edit: also, if you're going to say anything that would fall under the aforementioned "sock puppeting" one would almost have to out oneself, no?
And if you say "I think PomBear's real name is great..." that is going to constitute canvassing.

I'm confused by that. It says no canvassing before 21st March for the part-time elections but further up it says they were held on the 15th March. bit weird :/
Thought they were canvassing for more than 2 days last year for the full-time elections

Yeah but the mod would be aware of our names and can monitor it, either way, i'm easy on the subject.

They didn't update all of the dates when they changed it for 2012. That's hardly surprising though.

I've updated the OP again. Boards can't get into the position of possibly affecting the running of the election, hence the changes.

    Brief summary:
    • No mentioning of candidates until they've been announced
    • No specific policies to be mentioned until they've been released
    • No canvassing by candidates
    • Talk about what you'd like to see in policies
    • General discussion about the election

Sorry for all the edits. I know it's a tad confusing. Hopefully this will clear it up.

I hear there is possibly more than one person currently on the SU as a part time running for full time this year. For the same position no less.
Just wondering does anyone consider anyone on the part time executive full time material?

Haha I don't know how we can get around all these rules about posting, maybe a thread on Reddit or something?

    Senan (Irish Officer)

Whoever runs for Welfare will have their work cut out for them. Emma and Brian have both been pretty damn amazing at the job so they'll have a fair bit to live up to.
