    Hi loking for advise.

I drive a Hyundai Trajet. I've just had it serviced by my regular mechanic and noticed he's changed the tyre size from 215/65/R15 to a smaller size 205/60/R15.

    I have two questions.
    1) is this safe
    2) Will it pass the NCT.

    Thanks for the advise

It's not unsafe, if he's replaced all the tyres

They'll pass it on the nct if the car has matching front tyres and matching rear tyres. Personally I'd be administering a bollocking and demanding the correct tyres.

It's s whole load of hassle if you have a pair of different sizes, especially if you have to use the spare or rotate the tyres.

If its only 1 that he fitted and its different from the other 3 then yes you will fail the Nct.If the 4 of them are the same you`ll be ok.

    Thanks for the replies.
He changed all four tyres. The only way i noticed it was i had to put on the larger spare.

What about the wear on the tyres though? surly being smaller tyres they'd wear faster!

Not so much as our notice, your fuel consumption could arguably be worse ow, as the gearing is now effectively shorter. But again it's marginal. I'd get the spare changed though.

There's roughly 5% difference in Circumference

205/60/15 are completely the wrong size and far too small for a trajet.

Also, the load rating required for a trajet is 96H(or V) and the majority of 205/60's are only 91 meaning they are not made for the weight of a trajet. Even the heaviest rating available in the 205/60's is 95H/V.

At best, they will wear extremely quickly(the trajets are heavy enough on tyres as it is), at worst they will be very easily damaged on poor roads/potholes etc.
Overloaded tyres can also become unstable at motorway speeds due to excess heat.

It was extremely unprofessional of your mechanic to fit those tyres IMO.

Thanks for the feed back. insightful as always.
Ive noticed the difference in the wear between the 98V and the 100V.
I'll have to get back onto him to get him to change them.
