Would it be a good idea to sticky this, would have found this very helpful when my husband was diagnosed with cancer.

Are any of these support places worth a damn?

Do they actually help people or do they just stand outside Banks and Post Offices looking for Money to keep CEOs in Mansions and Mercs?

I don't know. I'm sure they must help some people.

It would be great one of the Cancer charities could make it their focus to tackle some practical problems for people with cancer who are in hospital.

My father was diagnosed with cancer some weeks ago and is currently in hospital (Oncology ward).

His bed is extremely basic and cannot be adjusted to raise his upper body.
His chair is inadequate, in that he can't lean his head back. So he has a choice between lying down flat, or sitting uncomfortably.
The windows are literally sealed shut, so he can't get a bit of fresh air.

I seriously wanted to cry when I saw the crappy bed and chair he has. I wish some money could be directed into basic stuff like this for Oncology wards...

    Sorry to hear this Nomde.

Their must be something that can be done to sort out a proper Bed. I've never seen an unadjustable bed in a Cancer Ward before, I thought they were a given. Have you mentioned it to a Nurse?

Maybe someone here can direct you on what to do.

I've come across the sealed windows to, during the summer with the heat on full blast aswell, it can be unbearable, no sense to it.

With regard to money going in to Hospitals from Charities to pay for those types of things, I don't think it'd be a good idea, if the Charaties started doing this (now I don't know what they spend their Money on) their would be less to do the work I'm assuming they do.

And then where would the line be drawn, would it get to the stage where their would have to be fundraisers to fit out Wards for Patients....

The State should pay for these things, that's what we are taxed for. It's what the Fianna Failures should have been focusing on during the fake boom, along with schools, instead of billion euro roads that were built for a fraction of, in other countries.

And now the present idiots are wasting it paying back public private debt to Euro Banks that should be told where go for their reckless lending.

You're right, it's not a charity's responsibility to kit out a hospital ward. I'm sure they do very good work in other areas. I'll mention the bed problem to a nurse if dad lets me (he doesn't want to be demanding).

Are any of these support places worth a damn?

Do they actually help people or do they just stand outside Banks and Post Offices looking for Money to keep CEOs in Mansions and Mercs?

I can only speak for the Gary Kelly centers, as they are the only ones I know anything about. Gary Kelly used to play for Ireland, I think I remember reading that he lost a sister to cancer. He earned some good money playing soccer in England and put much of it to good use in his cancer center which offers good support to people with cancer. But it seems that the center itself is not really up to date as regards treatments and stuff. However, it does it's best. I am sure of that.

This thread was started by the OP to give links to centres that provide help and support for Cancer patients and their familes/friends.

The last six posts have had little or no bearing on the topic, culminating with post #9, which really belongs on the conspiracy theory forum.

Can we please have the list started by msthe80s turned into a Sticky.

...and can the others please refrain from posting "Magic Bullet" cures on this thread......:mad::mad:

    ......Posted by a Cancer Survivor.

PS: If anyone wants to respond to this post, please start a new thread - I might be willing to discuss things there..but NOT here.. This thread was started for another reason.

I have rethought what you said and deleted the message and opened in a new thread.

Thank you Condo 131 for your support..one of the reasons I started the thread,is because, as we all know- the challenges facing the Dept of Health means that cancer care and support might, quite honestly, go under the radar.
These other agencies offer support-and cancer patients and their families-and indeed survivors- need as much support as possible.

They are a great charity - they helped me when I was diagnosed with oesophageal over 5 years ago.

Just finished 4 hours collecting for Daffodil Day - a huge number of collectors out here in Cork. Fabulous response........very high proportion of people sporting daffodils, badges or carrying daffodils - great to see!

In relation to Shave or Dye, If i went and got my hair cut today, and told the barber to donate the money to this cause, how can he do it?

you'd have to ask him first- check www.cancer.ie ,you can donate directly online yourself.
Whether it's Shave or Dye, Daffodil Day or whatever...it all goes to the ICS.

PM if you run into problems!

I ended up handing 20 euros to a neighbour who was doing a fundraising day in her house. She made over 5 grand.
