What exactly does student membership get you? Where are the list of places where there are discounts?

As far as I have been able to make out in my year as being a member all I get is a regular email from them which I've never seen anything relevant to me in, so now I don't even skim through it.

They have group scheme that gives you discounts on a a lot of different things. Its also worth checking out the calender, they have a lot of interesting events on and some enable you to watch the conferences live on-line.

I got free food at a barbeque once, made the free membership worth it.

The letter I got from them says that they now have an employment service, including the ability to upload your CV. I'm thinking I may get more involved for the sake of "networking", too.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Had a chat with the Student Membership team in here and they provided me with the following benefits of being a student member of Engineers Ireland.

Sponsorship Opportunities - Engineers Ireland offers sponsorship opportunities to your college engineering society. If there is an event that your engineering society would like to organise please let us know and we would be happy to help out.

Information online - Check out Engineers Ireland TV and our bi-monthly journal in the members only area, these information resources may be very useful when researching information for your college engineering assignments.

    • Want to Volunteer? - Get engineering-related experience while you’re still studying. Put yourself forward for volunteering with our STEPS programme at www.steps.ie

Link with Divisions / Societies -Engineers Ireland has many different divisions and societies and affiliating yourself with one of them is a great first step in meeting like-minded individuals. Each society / division also provide a fantastic opportunity to avail of free lectures, seminars and social events.

Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn - Our social media accounts are a regular source of information and highlights any jobs or graduate placement training programmes that may be taking place in the future months.

Graduate career sessions - Run for final year students, it will give them an insight into the skills engineering companies expect in their graduate employees

CV Doctor - Graduates can email their CV's into Engineers Ireland, where they will be critiqued by trained CV screeners with constructive feedback given

Employment Services Section - Engineers Ireland graduate members can upload their CV and profile to the membership area. This will allow the Engineers Ireland Employment team to link them with potential employers

Join Young Engineers Society - The YES run a number of events and courses throughout the year which are generally free for student and graduate members.

If you have any other questions just ask.

If you join you automatically become a member of EYE (the European Young Engineers) www.e-y-e.eu

They hold conferences around Europe twice a year for a max cost of €150 (including accommodation) which is a great chance to travel and meet other young engineers. The last conference was held at the world engineers convention in Geneva - it was a pretty amazing opportunity for a young engineer to go to!

The next conference is in Rotterdam in June, October in Malta and 2013 will be hosted by Engineers Ireland in Dublin. They are all advertised on the EI events emails when registration opens.

As jobs are so competitive these days involvement with the Young Engineers Society and EYE really makes your CV stand out from the crowd. (Involvement with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Ireland is another one that will make you stand out - find them on Facebook). Speaking from experience you get out of membership what you put in.

If you're just getting emails and magazines your not making the most of it! Try joining the committee most relevant to your degree or the job you want (or your regional branch) - they are always interested in getting younger members to join - you'll get to know prominent engineers in your area (who may think of you when a job comes up) and learn a lot from them too. (to get more info just email Engineers Ireland to say which committee your interested in and they'll put you in touch)

PS. If your looking for jobs EYE has a new twitter account with info on jobs (from all over the world) and careers guidance info - it's pretty new but keep an eye on it as it's getting better all the time :)@EYEngineersJOBS
