Hey, I have a pre-built computer right now and I am waiting for my new parts to arrive, I was just making sure before I buy a new Windows 7 retail version that there is no way that my current Windows 7 will work on the new computer? I am keeping my current hardrive and I plan on just moving it over to the new PC.

No need to buy a new copy. Just call MS up and deal with a computer auto-prompter. I did it last week for my new build ( went from AMD to Intel board with an OEM copy of windows 7), but I was put through to real person because I should have hit change product key in windows activation. No worries though, they just walked me through the activation process no questions asked, lol. As long as you have a product key your gold.

You can't just move the hardrive over without reinstalling windows on the new PC.

You can actually... it'll usually "work" without making a single modification to Windows. For example I moved a HDD with a 3 year old Windows Vista install (Along with a lot of applications) from my old desktop to a new one... Here's the difference in spec

    Foxconn G33M02 Socket 775 Motherboard
    E2180 @ 2.66GHz (Pinmodded)
    3GB DDR2
    Nvidia 9600GT 512MB

    to

    Asrock Z68 Pro3 Socket 1155 Motherboard
    i5-2500K
    8GB DDR3
    AMD HD6850 1GB

That's a change of chipset, CPU architecture, RAM type and speed and even a completely different GPU and Windows Vista booted up first time and worked. Not well but it was perfectly functional. With a bit of work, I could have had it running a lot better but since it was a temporary HDD swap I didn't bother.

Thanks, sounds easy but I don't know if my conscious can handle the lying :(

What number should I call when installing? Is this what I will have to do?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950929

Can't load that page for some reason, is it pretty much the same?

EDIT: restarted my computer and it works, thanks. So with my OEM version I don't need anything else? Just to set up the computer then install windows and follow the instructions from then on?
