Sounds possibly like your clutch wont disengage. If you put your car into gear with engine off and try start it - will in lunge forward? If so, sound like clutch...

Problem most likely with the clutch so....There could be something like a spring actually broken off and causing it or just a worn clutch. Bring it to a back street garage and they will sort it out. Avoid the main dealers as will cost you double!

Do they have hydraulic clutches or clutch cables out of a matter of interest?

Think the MK4's car Hydraulic Clutches.. Could be wrong tho

Ahh right, might be worth checking the clutch fluid reservoir so? even though I assume the clutch pedal is returning to the normal position after. I remember on Civics the slave cylinder used to leak fluid and prevent it from selecting gears.

ok strange one lads but my mate came up and its fine now he said gear box is sound and the clutch he said because it was a cold night the gel in the gear box may have froze or it could be low on fluid or it could be clutch fluid well thats what I think he said lol going to take it to mechanic to get sorted next week will keep you updated

Does the clutch pedal return to the normal position by itself when your foot is off it? The transmission fluid wouldnt (or shouldnt) freeze either.

Had the very same problem recently with my Honda, wouldn't engage in first or reverse when the engine was started. Had to put it in first before starting. Turned out the small clutch fluid reservoir had run dry. Once I topped it up with clutch fluid from the local garage and pressed the clutch up and down a few times (to draw the fluid in) its been fine, very smooth gear changes now.
You don't need a mechanic, just find out where your clutch fluid reservoir is and check the level.

just back from my mechanics and he said basically a small piece of the flywheel has broken off and became lodged and that it could happen again or may never happen again but im going to upgrade to a sports clutch to be safe, anyways all gears changes are perfect now

    Seen these on Micksgarage.ie

An idea on what it will cost for a new clutch.

    Without central slave cylinder: €236.52

    With central slave cylinder: €315.54

    Free Delivery!

Just standard clutch by the way!

my mate just said to just get a new lightened fly wheel instead of full clutch kit as the clutch is fine would this work ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,339 ✭✭✭brembo26

Probably, just said id throw them up anyway. Im not a mechanic :P

Went back on to micksgarage.ie there but cant see any flywheels for any golf except for diesels. Expensive too, cheapest (for the diesel) is €403.75

If the slave cylinder is inside the gear box then change it. If it fails it'll mean pulling the gear box again to replace it. For the extra cost it's worth it. I've got caught out by taking the cheap option on this before.

Can't see how a lightened flywheel will cure a problem that shouldn't be there.
