Anyone bought a tour of Peru (not including flights). Am tempted to go there sometime this year. Want to see Lima, Cuzco, Machu Picchu, and the Nazca Lines.

has anyone done these as part of a tour? Anyone brave enough to drive?

What is the best time of year to visit?

I really wouldn't drive. The roads are a bit mad. In places you could be hours without a rest stop and if you ran out of petrol there you'd be screwed. Buses are so cheap and if you can sleep on them then you can be rested and enjoy the time when you get to a place (but I know, driving can be it's own fun).

I went with a group - I think they were called Condor Travel. We only went because I was some older people (50's) who didn't want any hassle and wanted to see everything in a very short space of time. By the end of it they were wrecked because it's go go go all the time. If you have the time I'd really go it alone. It's such a great country to travel. And I didn't pay for my trip, but I'd say it was pretty expensive.

    Thanks Dory!

Define mad please, I have driven in Mexico including Mexico city and other mad spots like Morocco.

The bus tours are about a grand each

How safe is the country, I hear Lima can be dodgy enough, i assume its ok outside though

Morocco and Mexico are a different kind of mad. I meant more like this:

Now imagine that for 12 hours non-stop. But sometimes it's more steep and more bendy. Then imagine a big ass truck coming against you on a corner when you're driving on the outside.

But hey, I'm always one for adventure. I'm not saying don't do it. Just that's it's not a case of European-like driving.

I know a great PEruvian family in Lima who take lodgers if you want to get to know some local people. They'll also be able to give you advice about getting a car.

Look up G adventures (formerly Gap adventures) I saw some of Peru with them, Lake Titicaca, Cuzco, Macchu Piccu, the amazon. They were brilliant, used all local guides, very professional and good value for money for someone who wanted to see a lot in a limited amount of time.....they do include teh Nazca Lines in a longer tour than the one I did.....I did a two week tour and spent time in Lima before it and flew onto Brazil afterwards. You wont need much time in Lima, we had 3 days and it was probably 1 day too many

Some parts of Morocco and Mexico were just like that believe it or not! it was extremely tiring though, said i'd never do it again!

I have a bit of planning to and very few decisions made, appreciate the advice and the offer!
