WINDOWS MEDIA SHARING EXTENDER

[/B]hi guys im having a problem with connecting my xbox and laptop (windows 7) for windows media sharing ive got to the point were i enter 8 digit password and it says i need to change my windows firewall or contact my router provider[/B] (upc) to attach an extender. . ive tried everything, ive googeled it, ive rang around, ive disconnected my firewall reset my router deleted my anti virus reinstalled my anti virus . . . i have rang upc who told me to ring microsoft who then told me to ring upc and visa versa ive tried everything that was possible and i still do not no what to do can someone who has delt with this situation please advise me on what to do??

so again im trying to connect my laptop and xbox for window media sharing and it tells me i need an extender

Have you turned off both the windows firewall and the upc firewall? Normally it's the windows firewall blocking it

I bet you are trying to use the laptop wirelessly, right?

Try and have both the xbox and laptop connected by ethernet cables through your router, not using the wifi, which seems to cause serious issues!

If you have to have one of them wireless then make sure it's the Xbox, not the laptop. It's been a recurring problem that keeps popping up every six months or so on this forum but you'll find millions of threads about it if you do a quick google search..

There's no fix, just for some reason WMC seems to have this problem for "some" users. I don't think anyone has ever figured out why it effects some users and not others. Going down the wired route seems to bypass the problem though.

ok so heres a long story kinda cut short

so after trying everything that i was told to do or tried to do my self. .

i deleted my windows media sharing centre and restored my computer and in order to do that i had to disable my anti virus and i think by doing so it updated or backdated it to a better version compatable with my xbox however microsoft and my upc (broadband) had no clue what to do and either did i. . i fixed the problem in the end . . .
now the problem is not fixed cause when i logged on this morning it was still set up, i had my extender but my xbox was not connecting . . i think my anti-virus (kaspersky) is just to strong i tried lowering the firewall and sharing settings but i couldnt find the settings weather they are there or not i could not find them

if you are trying to do what i have done please be aware if you delete your windows media centre the only way i got mine back was by system restore and not by download . . i would advise disableing your anti virus before system restore it will save you about an hour (trust me)

I had tried absolutely everything else until I found this thread! Everything. I had uninstalled the extender for WMC both on xbox and pc. Opened the ports recommended online even though they never needed opening before. All the usual restart and resetting of everything modem router pc xbox. Cleared the xbox cache. Went into my firewall settings on the antivirus and made a couple changes. Lifted windows firewall and anti virus. Enabled game mode, disabled it. EVERRRRRRRYTHING!!

So in the last half an hour i connected by Ethernet and streamed an avi i had. Let it run for about 5 minutes and stopped it. Removed the cable and went back to the video player and it could still see my laptop!! Happy days. Went in and bang i was up and running. Watched a few minutes of the same avi.

Thought to myself ill just shut down the xbox and try again to see if its permo fixed. GONE AGAIN!!!!

I know this is no help, but I'm now on Windows 8 and streaming of media to Xbox wirelessly works fantastically through Smartglass. Would recommend.

I'm not sure how much help this will be but ps3mediaserver will solve all of your woes for streaming to your xbox.

Hi Folks,

I made a guide a while back on how I got my Windows Media Centre working with Windows 7.

It's worth a go, but as other posters have stated Tversity or PS3 Media Server maybe a better fit for ye if all you want is streaming video.
