Freeview in Dublin - Work or Not?

    Hello there,

I am very interested in Freeview and have read threads here in this forum from a number of contributors. Some it is possible, and then some say it is possible provided we have high atmospheric pressure etc.

I live in the Dundrum area and can see the sea from upstairs and I am quite sure there would be a better view from the roof. I have freesat in a number of rooms in the house already and have Irish DTTV going to every room from a small antenna in the attic.

If it is available, I would love to pull in UK Freeview if it is available.

So, before I go spend money getting an outdoor antenna installed, and convince my wife that this is a good idea, may I ask who has successfully got Freeview working in their house and roughly what area you are in? Also what antenna are you using and what UK antenna is it pointed at?

    Many thanks.

    Regards,

    D.

If you are high enough to see the sea you may be lucky enough to get FreeView from the North when they boost their power after ASO. Some of your neighbours may have old aerials pointing north to give you some indication of the possibility.
Given that you already have FreeSat, there is very little to be gained by the trouble and expense of getting FreeView also. Quest and Yesterday are the only half decent channels you're missing, IMO.

In VHF days, some people in Lr Kilmacud had N.I. TV. Next door neighbour in late 1960s moved there and I stayed with them to visit the 1971 Young Scientist then.

Lots of people up around Leopardstown and in the estates off the top half of Newtownpark Ave. have one large yagi aerial pointing north to pick up Clermont Carn in Co. Louth and Camlough near Newry. Even though Three Rock is only a few kms to the south, hardly any of them have an aerial pointing south, they appear to get everything from the one large yagi.

The vertical alignment gives it away, Clermont Carn in Co. Louth as far as I know is the only one of the major RTE transmitters with vertical alignment.

Interesting question, and touched on here a few times over the last couple of years.
From memory, there are two posters who live in The Gallops in Leopardstown and receive Freeview from Wales. There was also somebody in an apartment block in Parnell St trying, but we got no results. Theres another poster in Swords who was putting up a high pole/aerial, but I think his landlord objected. There was a poster from beyond Finglas, on the Ashbourne road who was adiment that he had NI Freeview.
Dont know what the senario will be when UK does Analogue Switch Off. I'm in Sutton, very low down, but with a clear line of sight North. Would like to think I could get NI Freeview after ASO. Whilst I have Freesat, the availabilty of BBC, ITV, CH4, Ch5 etc on my Saorview box with the RTE's would be great.

I have also been looking at this possibility. Click on this link and you will find a lot of useful info regarding freeview and saorview (the equipment required, combined etc). The best option for the Dublin area is to align aerial with Arfon in North Wales. If you manage to get reception in due course you might share this info with board members, plz.

I'm in Leopardstown Heights and have freeview coming in from Arfon. It comes through around 98% of the time. Bear in mind this is Freeview lite so only the public muxes and I haven't been able to receive the HD mux in despite having a HD receiver. This is using a Group A aerial which isn't suitable for Arfon frequencies along with the masthead amp.

I've been able to get in Blaenplwyf and Llanddona intermittantly but not for a useable amount of time.

I'm hoping that once power is boosted up the north I might be able to get the commercial muxes from there.

    Martin,

I cannot see the link - can you add it please?

Of course I will share how I get on. Feedback & sharing info is one the things I enjoy about Boards. I was hoping that we would hear from more people that have been successful in getting Freeview operational.

I am the very early stages at the moment where I am planning. I want to gather as much info as possible before I make the leap of faith.

    Interesting post Jazzy.

You are considerably higher up than us. Do you think that getting Freeview Lite is down to the antenna, or other factors?

Arfon only transmits the 3 PSB muxes aka 'Freeview Lite'.

It's really only a medium powered fill-in transmitter, available in Ireland due to the site & mast height.

You might get Divis alright once the power is up.

If you had a proper group B and masthead amp you would the arfon hd mux alright.
It is more sensitive and needs the proper gear.
It follows from that, that you'd have probably 100% reliable arfon with the group B if you are getting it most of the time now minus the hd mux using an A.

There are old divis analogue aerials around goatstown by the way.

Further down towards the N11 around sandyford as has been said,it's kilkeel and clermont, though I suspect 3rock comes in fine through the back of those aeriqals.
