I've seen this job title floating around a bit. What does it actually mean? What does a director of rugby do? Google isn't really helping.

Over sees everything basically, will negotiate players contracts. Involved in the coaching side of things to be a much lesser extend. Kinda like a team manager.

varies hugely between organisations. It usually leaves the director with the power to have as much or as little involvement as they want. Conor O'Shea at Harlequins is pretty much just acting as first team coach using the veil of director of rugby.

It means whatever the organisation wants it to mean. Usually it involves less hands on coaching and selection and more organisational, communication, image management, player acquisition, partnership management and academy management. The coach/manager is focusing on success at present and for 1 year ahead. The director of rugby is in charge of consistent success for the foreseeable future up to 10/15 years down the line. Making sure the structures are in place.
