    Hi

Need someones help here, not only did my main external hard rive die, but my backup also, literally within a minute of each other. they are both maxtor products (1tb and 500gb) that i use with my mac, the light is coming on but there is no life from either of them, the light comes on then flickers out. i have tried different plugs, different usb's, different computers, but nothing, anyone any ideas?

    thanks in advance

could try removing the drives and putting in another enclosure.

if that doesn't work then data recovery is the only option

I know this is probably completely wrong but I was absolutely convinced one day that my external had given up when I was just being an eejit.
Have you tried connecting your HD and going into disk utility and maybe repairing it? I made the mistake unplugging my HD while using my laptop and then it wouldn't work on any of the Macs in college, in the middle of an assignment, absolute nightmare...was convinced I'd broken it until I plugged it back into the same machine I failed to eject it from :)

My friend had this problem with her 2010 iMac last week. Her "pocket" USB drive stopped being recognised by the Mac (which kindly offered to erase it for her!)

It has a split USB cord - one plug for power and one for data and power. I reckon she had not followed the rule of "connect power first and disconnect last" so the Hard drive directory got damaged. I fixed it quite quickly by using "Disk Warrior". I bought this software a couple of years ago and it has been invaluable.

The last time the same lady damaged her drive directory, it was unrecoverable and I was forced to use Prosoft "Data Rescue". It worked fine but she was left with hundreds of images labelled "imag0001.jpg, image0002.jpg" etc. I thought that would teach her, but obviously it didn't!

When my own Western Digital "My Book" Hard Drive died completely, I traced the fault to the USB/Firewire interface board in the housing. Fitting the drive into a new housing cured the problem but left me suspicious of all WD hardware.

I hope these notes give you a clue. :)
