goto www.motortax.ie and then vehicle transaction enquiry on the left. then enter the reg. if it says change of ownership has been completed then it should tell you when the logbook went out. if its a while back then you should prob contact shannon. if its not showing as changed ownership then id contact the mechanic to chase things up.

    just my thoughts.

If you have the car reg, you can check online motortax.ie and it will tell you if a transfer has been done to your name. If it has it is easy to get a dup tax book, just get form from the tax office and it costs 12 euro for replacement.:D

you can do a statuary declaration to shannon (i think you need to do this via a solicitor). this basically says you are the legal owner and it should be in your name.

they will then contact the registered owner and give them x days to respond or else the change of ownership will go through and you will be the registered owner. if the registered owner disputes it then it needs to be worked out at that point whether it be through legal means or whatever. i think, but am not sure, that the onus is then on you to prove you own it.

if there's still money o/s with the mechanic then i cant imagine that this is likely to be your best option and i personally think you should contact the mechanic.

you can transfer the car yourself if he doesnt bother sending it off. not sure of the exact form for it or whatever but shannon send a letter to the last registered owner and if they dont reply or get in contact within a certain period it becomes yours.

OP, get back onto the mechanic, he probably got lazy over Christmas and didn't bother his ass sending it off. Tell him to get the finger out or a few trips through a toll will mean that the previous owner will get the bills so they will be on his case also.

tbh i dont even think its in the mechanics name as he said he was waiting on last owner to get it to him

This happened to me a few years back.

Eventually the guy came clean and said he couldn't find it, but I reckon he never had it.

I went to my local motor tax office. Filled out a form. They then send a letter to the last registered owner explaining the situation. If they don't reply within 3 weeks, the car is yours and you get a new logbook in your name.

Most likely thing here is that the guy you bought the car off hasn't got the logbook. Call him and ask him to be honest and if you get no answers call your local motor tax office.
