solicitor needed for mortgage topup?

hi, I'm planning to put an extension on to the back of our house. We're going to fund it using a topup on our existing mortgage. Our bank, KBC, want us to hire a solicitor for this. Is this the norm?

Yes, this is normal. In order for you to get the top up there are legal obligations you have to meet, these will have to be explained to you by a legal professional otherwise you could claim ignorance if something should go wrong.
