As the title says due to cutbacks, phase 2 training will now be done in Templemore. This training will be conducted over a two week period, Monday to Friday 9 to 5.First batch is due to start on 23 of this month. Not looking good folks, no money for overtime to do it in the divisional stations so its Templemore from now on.

I can see the positives who can get off work or who do not have work commitments but otherwise it is a hell of a lot to ask of people! I for one have no hope of getting the time off!

I understand it makes fiscal sense for AGS but it puts a dampner on a lot of peoples chances of making it past phase 1!

My dad is a senior garda who I've never heard speak bad of AGS and even he said its a disgrace to require reserves to dedicate two full weeks, those in work, college etc Granted there has to be cutbacks but he reckons this is crossing the line, just his opinion of course.
Even if a person got two weeks leave from their employer it might be unpaid or two weeks from their holidays which they might have spent on some beach abroad relaxing from their regular job
Alot wont be able to complete phase 2 but suppose AGS know they'll have enough applicants to cover withdrawals

Could'nt agree more, I guess for ever 2 or 3 that cant attend there will be the same again who can. If I was to know when I applied that it would talk 2 weeks I wouldnt have bothered, last time I checked Phase 2 was over evenings and weekends for 8 weeks. My leave would be unpaid (which I don't mind as I really want to get into the GR) but I have no hope of getting it from my employer! It really is a kick in the teeth after waiting 5 years to get this far......ah well, such is life!

What are you going to do? Are you still going to attend phase 1? I'm trying my best to get the time off for phase 2, I don't think I'll have any joy!! And calling in sick is not what I want to do!!

I honestly have no idea what I will do Busygirl. I have literally in the last couple of minutes sent an email to the garda reserve office telling them my situation and that I was under the assumption that it would take place over evenings and weekends. Only for boards.ie and seeing the posts, I would be non the wiser. I will still attend the Phase 1 as I reckon it would be no harm......but after that I really dont know as I know it would be a waste of time looking for the time off from my employers!

I know it is terrible!! I would't have know either I'd it was't for boards!! My employer are not the nicest to work for and getting time off is like getting blood out of a stone! I can't tell them what it is for, as it would't go down well!! And I refuse to go sick as the guilt would kill me!! Sure I'll see you on the 9th and good chat then!

Is this not a better option all around?

    In terms of yourselves:
    - you would save monies (petrol costs) from not travelling to and from your designate station each week for the legal studies as you'd be in the college.
    - you would save monies on lunches etc as your breakfast and dinner would be provided for you in the college.
^^ saving you monies towards your own allowance

    - also, knowing that you would have it covered over the two weeks and once you pass the exam, you move on to phase3 sooner than previous in-takes.

    - the local CPD Sergeants would be freed up for other courses & training etc.

I think this could be a win-win for everyone and can see the advantages all round.

Once an explanation goes in to your employer as to the reasoning for you needing the two weeks, surely most would be reasonable and try to assist you

It is two weeks as opposed to trying to arrange a day suitable for 2-10 people in your group at the station each week over numerous weeks,
    although
If you were in college full-time though it could prove difficult, especially if your in-take were near assessment due-dates / exam time.

Is it work commitments people are concerned about in here? Are some of you in full-time education and working also?

I will see you then Busygirl for a good natter!!

Kerry4Sam, I understand the financial aspect of it but then again if it was evenings and weekends I would not be losing 2 weeks income!

The main concern I have is getting the time off as i am teaching leaving certain students in 3 different schools and in 2 of them I am the only teacher of that subject so as nice as the principals are, there hands are pretty much tied, especially at this time of the year!

The points you make about the financial advantages and getting it over and done quickly are valid but its the getting down there that will cause me the most hassle! I am an unqualified sub teacher in my first year so can't really afford to rock the boat!

You certainly have your hands full as is. How long would you have been with those groups of students? 3 different schools?! Well done you!

I am sure though that their would be no problem in you postponing your phase2 to maybe another time, to join another in-take, when your school would be closed
I'm sure you'll find HQ would accommodate you in circumstances like this, if they can :)

The students are adults returning to do their leaving cert so they are handy(ish) to teach (besides its only 11 hours per week). I will ring HQ and see what they say as I really want to do the training.

Im just after looking on www.garda.ie and it still shows Phase 2 as:

Phase 2: 56 Hours (minimum) training to be delivered in 3 hour modules over evenings and weekends. This training will include legal instruction on the Road Traffic Acts, Arrestable Offences, Assaults, Public Order, Garda Powers, Taking Crime Reports and Garda IT systems

It also says Phase 1+3 will take place over weekends(Saturday and Sunday). It is not really fair for people to be told this before the training takes place (we are the lucky ones who know the story with Phase 2 now - others wont, and will get a shock next week!).

I will post up what im told by the GR Office later on......fingers crossed!

I called the GR HQ and I was told that if I am not able to do Phase 2 then I should not go down to phase 1 next week. The reason for this is because I was told on the invitation to Phase 1 that Phase 2 would be over a 2 week period. This is not that case, as I have checked the invitation emailed to me (If you want I can attach it on a PM - not sure if I should attach it here).

I also have an email that I received from the office and I can forward that onto anyone who would like to see it. Just send me a PM

The jist of the email is that I should attend Phase 1 on February 9th and 10th and then defer phase 2 till a date that suits me (from the list I was given). There are quite a number of available dates running until the end of the year.

    Okay
    - Fair enough postponing your phase1 until you can commence phase2 shortly afterward. I can see the logic to that. It would also allow you to remain on with your own group and follow through to the end with them.

    - Feel free to send me via pm regarding anything if you like. Just don't attach anything official or post any official documentation on this forum. Thank You.

    - If I were you I would chose option 1 above, i.e. postpone the start of your training. You will understand why it is important to keep contact with your group once you commence your training. If you change between intakes, then it just won't be the same!

As I said, send me on a pm if you like.

    Thanks,
    kerry4sam

Has anyone started this phase as yet, and what do you think of it being for two weeks, any feedback on this would be good for others who will be going to do the same.
