Hi folks, just wondering if anyone here has any experience with the new model Grand Scenic. Looking at the 2009 1.5 dci

Other than the usual Renault comments, have Renault managed to iron out the reliability issues.

    Thanks

I did test drive one with the DSG type autobox, whatever Renault call it.

It drove very well and had a 5 year warranty included but I could'nt get past the Renault problems in my head.

I drive a Renault every day, not mine, just as a matter of interest.

Thanks ei9go. That's the issue though, are the issues associated with old versions or have the issues been resolved. The reliability surveys only appear up to 2009.

Renault has had some reliability issues but they got exaggerated by pub talk and waffle on internet forums.

You're right to think that many of the "horror" stories relate to old models and engines - for instance the Laguna II phase I 2.0 petrol. Not only is that car out of production for 7 years but it was never sold in Ireland with that engine.

Anyway, reliability started improving in 2005/2006 with the phase 2 versions of the Megane II, Laguna II and Scenic II. The Megane III, Laguna III and Scenic III are better again and are probably as reliable as anything out there plus many of them have 5 year warranties. However if you are buying a 2009 from a dealer and it has the 5 year warranty, make sure to get something in writing about it as AFAIK the remainder of the warranty is not transferable unless the car is sold privately.

In terms of the Scenic reliability, from 2008 to 2010 it has a higher rating in the ADAC Pannenstatsitik (breakdown statistics) than the 2008 to 2010:
    VW Touran
    Ford C max
    Opel Zafira
    Mazda 5
    Toyota Verso
    Ford S max
    VW Sharan
    and many others

Thanks Brian, exactly sort of info was looking for. I'd be heading to the UK for the car. Looking at some that clear for just over 12k. Seem like a nice car and would hold onto it for 5+ years.

Is the Warranty transferable from the UK

I don't think a UK car would have the 5 year warranty, the extended warranty offered here is actually a third party warranty and I think it was for Ireland only. A UK Scenic would probably have had a 3 year/100k km warranty.

Would you recommend the UK route. Looking like 2k savings. Any drawbacks

Never imported a car myself so can't really say. 2k is a fair saving. But if comparing a 2009 UK car with effectively no warranty with an Irish one with possibly 2 years (either a dealer warranty or the remainder of the original 5 year warranty) left plus the inconvenience of getting the car in from GB - I'd probably just buy here.

Thanks Brian, something to think about alright.

Anyone buy one from UK recently or at least own one :)

I owned one for a year and had no issues. 1.5 DCi is a little bit weedy.

Why only owned for a year and was it the new model?

And its for the wife, so maybe Weedy would be ok as long as its not to bad!
