    Hi,

CIE just published a notice to tender some of the dark fiber they own arising from the deal they did with ESAT/BT years ago (cie.pdf attached).

The overlay of this network with the currently available MANs (CIE_Sharedfibrenetwork.pdf attached), together with the current operators, should drive some further and positive competition in the regions for backhaul to Dublin.

Will this only benefit large towns or will there be a ripple affect and improve services to rural areas as well?

    Total quantity or scope
The proposed long term contract covers spare capacity across 3 separate fibre-optic cables.
    1. Cable 1 is located across the majority of the national rail-network and reaches the major population centres totalling approximately 2,000km in length.
    2. Cable 2 is located across core sections of the rail-network and reaches the major cities (passes through all major towns on route to the cities) totalling approximately 900km in length.
3.Cable 3 is located across the rail network in the Greater Dublin Area and has been installed with recent line implementations on DART and commuter lines.

Difficult to know how this fits in with NewERA/Taskforce program. Particularly as CIE weren't invited to the party.
