    Hello all,

I wonder would anyone be kind enough to share your wisdom with me. After whittling down my options I've decided to purchase one of the 2 cars below. I just haven't made my mind up as yet. Have a 6 month warranty on the Mondeo and 12 month on the 407. I've driven both and slightly prefer how the Ford handles herself, the extra BHP is easily felt.

The number one concern is reliability - once bought I have no money to be throwing at repairs in the next 2 years. So which of the 2 below is more likely to give me grief?

    Any replies are greatly appreciated!

In general the Mondeo would be perceived as being more reliable but they are far from perfect and one thing I have noticed with them compared to the previous model and older Fords in general is that they cost a lot more to fix when they do go wrong. Fords have a reputation for being cheap to service and repair but that is going out the window with the new models IMO.

That 08 with 120,000km is getting into dual mass flywheel replacement territory and that is not a cheap job on those Mondeos. So have a good look through the history and see if it has already been done.

Electrics can be iffy on the 407, also it has a DPF which should have the correct additive topped up as part of the sale . The DPF will probably need to be replaced at around 80k miles too or sooner if the car was used for short trips, they cost the bones of €1k. Turbo failure is also common as the wrong grade of oil is either used or it isn't changed frequently enough.

The 1.8 TDCi in the Mondeo is not the best, the power delivery is very narrow on it. As already mentioned, DMFs fail on these regularly. The 2.0 TDCi is much better but there are fewer of them around in that year and they command a premium.

A Renault Laguna III is worth looking at too:

The 2.0tdci Mondeos eat DMFs as well.

I actually think the 407 is quite an under-rated car.

Are you sure you are not referring to the older model Mondeo 2.0 TDCi which was a Ford engine and known to go through DMFs alright. The 2.0 TDCi in the current Mondeo is a PSA HDi engine which is also used in the 407.

Yes I am sure. The old model gave plenty of bother as well though not at such low mileage in my experience. I have seen the newer model 2.0tdci DMF rattling badly at as little as 100,000km. The old model usually did at least 140,000km before acting up. The parts are much more expensive for the newer model also :(
