VW Golf Mk5 Airbag Fault

I have an 05 VW Golf Sport. The airbag fault sensor is on for the second time in the past six months.

The first time I took it to my local indy garage who said that the wiring loom had already been tampered with to bodge the job the first time, this was prior to me owning the car. He repeated the bodge on the wiring loom and the light dissappeared.

Last week, I had loaned the car to a friend and when I got back into the car I simultaneously moved the seat and turned on the ignition. Immediately the airbag fault light came on again.

The same indy garage had a look at it and tried to reset it but the light kept coming back, he said the VAGCOM was saying it was a fault in the side airbag of the drivers seat and that I might need a seat replacement, to be honest I don't think he was bothered hunting down the fault in the loom and as I told him I don't need an NCT for over 18 months so he said just to leave it.

However, I am possible emmigrating shortly and it would be very hard to sell the car with the fault light on so I was hoping someone could help me.

I have a couople of questions.

    1) I have read on other sites that there may be a recall on the wiring loom under the front seats on these cars, is this true?

    2) Does anyone know a quick fix?

    3) Has anyone had this problem before?

    4) Is there any safety issue with current set up, i.e. the fault in the system.

    5) Surely a seat replacement is a last resort?

    Thanks for your help

I am 90% sure that if there is a fault light the airbags system is disabled, so that would be a safety concern if you are considering being involved in a crash.

It shouldn't be that difficult to repair the loom properly.

Ive had a similer problem on a seat leon,
Solution was to take out the seats, cut the block connecters and crimp the connections with terminals,
Rang the dealer about this and thats what they said they do

Also the warning light will need to be reset with diagnostic tool afterwards

100% solution. You said airbag light was on after moving the seat, so the problem is just in the wiring under the seat. Some time you don't even need to take the seat away- there is enough space to cut out the socket and connect the cables directly. If you don't have diagnostics- try to disconnect the battery for a few minutes- it helps on some vehicles.

The fault code will not go on the VW until it is deleted. Pain in the arse.
