I'm just starting to write my first novel and have been reading about the Snowflake method and it sounds very appealing in terms of technique.

Has anyone used it and what are the benefits or drawbacks?

The chief drawback is that it takes so damn long to do the prep work. I've tried it before but the amount of work involved up front is insane.

With the Snowflake Method, you always know where you're going (and how) - which keeps some people motivated (they know what to write, so don't get stuck) and others bored (they know what they're supposed to write, so what's the point in actually sitting down and doing the writing). Definitely worth giving it a try, but it's not for everyone!

Pops while you're on that site you should sign up for Randy's newsletter. Lots of great advice in there and he's a genuinely nice guy. I've talked to him a few times and he's addressed my questions in the newsletter.

Ok antilles, that sounds pretty good, so I'll give it a go.

I do know where I'm going so I'm going along with this method just now as it's helping me break it down and give the whole thing more structure. It's roughly based on a short story I wrote a while ago - but it's a whole different ball game expanding it to a novel.
