Anyone remember this from the 70's & 80's? It was on during the summer months only and there were two versions. One was the liverpool crew and they other was Newcastle or somewhere further north (and it was the better of the two) It was a bunch of school kids in a big barn like building and they done experiments and played games and made art/craft stuff.

In the summers me and my friends would all usually be up around 8:30am in the morning and outside playing and Why Dont You started around 10am and we'd all head back to our own homes and watch it and then meet up again after it.

The full program title was "Why don't you turn off the TV and go and do something less boring instead"....I think!

Yes, I did find the idea of a tv program telling you to turn off the tv strange - even as a child.

    "Sitting at home watching TV
Turn it off it's no good to me

    Why don't you

    Why don't you

    Why don't yooooooooou
Just switch off your television set
and go out and do something less boring instead"

Always thought this was weird. Hey do you not want me to watch your programme??:D

It used to be on before Number 73

I think it was only on during holidays. At the time, we only got 1 and a half weeks off at Easter, yet this programme was on for the duration of UK kid's Easter holidays which lasted 2 and a half weeks so we had to miss a few programmes!
How jealous I was of the UK kids (forgetting they only got 6 weeks off for Summer!)

Why dont you. Yep remember it well.
It went down hill after a while.

When it started off it had pretty cool things on the program
when you were "that" age. after a while it started getting Naff.

By Naff I mean, when it first started it was a bunch of kids doing things
and projects and nifty stuff that was semi-scripted blue peter style.

After a while it got more like a soap-opera where instead of people with personalities they tried to develop characters with scripted storylines.

One of these was a nerdy bloke who had a re-occurring storyline
where he was on some quest for exploding milk.

That show aired before Biker Grove existed as far as I know so I'm not sure
if Ant or Deck slap head's featured in why dont you or if they got popular
when Spuggy the ginger, Ant and Dek, and the overweight bloke with a handlebar mustache took over the grove...along with the blonde haired rebal like character.

My only memory of Ant or Dek (dont know who is who) was from a biker groove episode where one of them took their safety googles off and got a paintball hit to the eyes resulting in blindness. The Horror of it all :o:rolleyes:

They appear to have been let out on good behavior for that ep. Most of the eps by comparison seemed to have just been in the studio like this

Weirdly this ep is from the 70's but the intro much sounds like something from the early 60's. Weirder still your clip is from the mid 80's but the theme seems to have been done in a 50's style. Don't know what point they were trying to make there.

The only thing I learnt from why don't you is you can't fold a sheet of paper more than 7 times. After that I can't remember a single thing about it. But having looked at the above vid I thing I remember the ball and sponge joke sketches.

Find it funny that in the opening credits it tells you to turn off your TV and do something less boring :p

I read many years afterwards that they actually fabricated good deal of viewer's letters .. the whole thing was a con.
