I pass 3 petrol stations on my way to work every morning and this morning I noticed all of them had raised their petrol prices by at least 2c, 1 station was at 1.57.9, a rise of 4c from yesterday.

Crazy! Why the rise now? Am I missing something?

Well the Iranian situation means that all the speculators are doing what they do best and crapping themselves in turn pushing up the oil rates for fear of them ACTUALLY going up as a result of shortage should Obama go in there and kick some Nuclear ass :)

The VAT increase hasn't helped either. 157.9 here also I can see the petrol station from the window and I actually like to keep the curtains closed now cause its depressing seeing at that price

Every year the government swoops in to pick up the slack from any decrease in oil price, increase in vehicle efficiency with more tax.

Switching to an electric car won't help either. Only for a few short years till the battery needs replacing and then you're shagged. If they ever sort the battery issue the government will require you to use a special electricity meter so you can charge it for 10x the price of normal electricity or else a GPS meter that taxes you for the distance you drive.

Buy a boat or a horse or a bicycle. Not that they won't eventually catch up with that either

The government tax is percentage based. Therefore if the base price rises, the tax take increases proportionally.

It may be a negligent amount on a few cents, but add them all together and it makes a pretty penny for the taxman.

Why is it when oil rises by, for example, 10c, the prices at the pump go up immediately, but when the prices go back down, they take ages to back down? If they ever do!

The prices go change when the petrol station's own tank is filled. The one here stayed at the same price for ages after the budget, but when filled again the new (usually higher) price comes in.

Although some petrol station owners are opportunistic and will put it up straight away. One I know of puts up the price 2c if there are races on the local racecource that day
