    I'm in the process of getting quotes for a central heating upgrade. Am I better off getting the materials myself or letting the gasman supply them. Would I be able to source them cheaper? Will the gasman add a little bonus to the price of the materials to bump up his profits?

    The "gasman" will probably put a mark up on the materials that's how he makes a profit for his company, how else can he make a profit. Weather or not you could source them cheaper I dont know, you would just have to look into it.

    The cost of his labor I'm sure will make him a nice profit. I suppose the question I'm asking is if there's a standard in relation to whether the gasman or the shops put a higher mark up on products. Or is it like everything else and you have to check everything out and some things will be cheaper and others not.

    The installer would normally get the materials at a trade discount price plus claim back the vat, he would then pass on the materials to you at full retail price, your buying the materials would mean the installer having to make his money on the labour only, and from recent posts that could work out a very expensive way of doing things in your location.

    By all means get the parts yourself and ask for a day rate, but if there are problems you will have to deal with your supplier and the manufacturer(s).
    Otherwise find an installer who knows their trade and pay them.

    welcome to dublin billy , in case you havent heard most suppliers down here have given 'trade' prices to the public now ,very little difference in me buying a boiler or my customer .heatmerchants have sent out flyers with the boiler prices on ,so have ross and o mahonys .so if you can get mark up on your product up thier fair play but dont be amazed when we have to make it on labour down here .
