I've been hypnotised 3 times to stop smoking. The first worked a charm... for about a week until something stressful happened. The second time I didn't get into a hypnotic state at all. That cost 250 euro. That was at a clinic which had 'gauranteed to stop you smoking' plastered all over the website. When I went back to them and saw a different hypnotist they tried to charge me double, so that ruined that session. I'm off fags a long time now thanks to patches and perseverence.

It's worth a shot but yes you still have to work at it and it's seriously expensive. And the 'profession' seems to attract creeps and arseholes. Just my humble opinion!

Will power yes but for me you actually have to want to given them up. I've never smoked myself but i know of two people i work with who have got Hypnosis and one is off them over 3years and the second is off them 6months so it can and does work.

My best friend saw an accupuncturist. She was on at least 10 a day, more when drinking, and hasn't touched one in 8 months now. She was smoking 20 years.

In fact she chases her husband around the house with Oust as she cannot stand the smell of cigs off him now :D
that sounds interesting. i never thought of accupuncture, any idea on the cost, time it takes etc.

Why dont you go over to the Giving Up Smoking forum here and for free you can get support and encouragement?

I am 13 days off them, cold turkey, I read the Allen Carr book over the first few days, but tbh, I was ready to stop and had been thinking about it for a long time.

I think with any 'aid' that people use to stop, they have to really want to stop or its just not going to work.

My OH gave up smoking after hypnosis.

The hypnotist also asked her to let him know if she was ever in the future tempted to resume smoking.

After about 14 mts after a very stressful time, she was thinking about a cigarette but called him - he gave her a free session and she has never looked back.

Edit. As a previous poster said, it can be expensive. I asked them about this and they said if they only charged 60Euro, a lot of people would think that it's cheap, and they might start smoking again with the notion that they can always spend another 60Euro to quit. If people are willing to pay more, then they will be more serious about quitting.

As has been stated, yes hypnosis can help and if done well will power shouldn't be needed. It is important that you remember that not all hypnotherapists have the same approach. Hypnotherapy isn't the same everywhere you go.

Glad i came across tis thread. Have wanted to give up for a good while but i just cantr seem to get the motivation to do it alone so have been thinking of hypnosis but dont just want to go to some random hypnotherapist as it isnt cheap and im worried they wont be good etc. So, can anyone who has posted hete sayiing they have been hypnotised and its worked for them please reccomend a hypnotherapist? Thanks

Friend of mine did it about 18 months ago and has never looked back. The way he described it was that will power was still required, he likened it to cold turkey but the hypnosis took the edge off it.

I've heard mixed reviews about hypnosis.

Personally I read the Alan Carr book and haven't smoked a cig since.

Ditto. I stopped smoking 4 years ago and the book really helped, but it's not a magic bullet, just extra ammunition.

I had made failed attempts to give up before and was simply 'ready' when I finally stopped. One of the most powerful messages I got out of the book was that you don't need willpower to stop doing something you don't really want to be doing in the first place...that was the kicker for me.

Not sure if you are in the process top stop smoking OP, but Good Luck if you are !

The Paul McKenna hypnosis did it for me. I tried willpower, patches, inhaler, herbal tablets, you name it, and always failed to stop for more than a few days. The Alan Carr book worked for me for nearly a year on my first attempt, then I stupidly thought I could have an odd one with a drink and was back on them in no time.

The Paul McKenna one is a book that comes with a CD. You can get it in most bookshops or Amazon or something for about €20 or so.

I didnt read the book as I just borrowed the CD and copied it onto my MP3. Now 5 years off the horrible yokes.
