    Hi,

I recently became interested in antique bottle collecting and I am wondering if there are any antique bottle fairs or gatherings in Ireland?

Also, what are the best sites for buying bottles on?

    ThanksJ

I can recommend this magazine: http://www.abc-ukmag.co.uk/ and there used to be an annual fair in the Spa Hotel, Lucan. I think a sub to the mag will give you any info that you could possibly want. :)

What kinds are you interested in collecting?

I have a modest collection myself and a few contacts in the hobby too..there are a handfull of people in Ireland who are serious collectors and they are tending to specialise in one form or another..as with nearly all antiques, the arse has largely dropped out of the market so be very carefull when buying.

    Hi Degsy,

my father has a collection of bottles which my brother and i were thinking of creating a website for.

I guess i was wondering if there are others in Ireland who would like to add their bottles to a website and if it is worth puttting together something where Irish bottle collectors could trade bottles.

    What do you think?

    Thanks

Bera in mind that bottles are only really collected pre-1920's as thats when bottles were made by hand and not machine.
Also there are lots and lots of old but pretty valueless bottles knocking around so you should get an idea of whats collectable before you go to the trouble of setting up a website.
Genrally speaking the following bottles are teh most collected

    Codds

    Hamiltons

    Poisons

    Pictorial Ginger beers

    Mallets

    Belarmines

    Onions

You may find other stuff is being collected but that's the broad collecting line.
    Do you have any pics?

    Cheers Degsy,
afraid i don't have any pics at the moment but i'm pretty sure alot of his collection are quite old. He definately has cods and poisons but i'm guessing he has some of the others you mention also.

I was thinking of putting a questionnaire together to see if there was any interest by bottle collectors to trade their bottles online. Any suggestions on the best place (physical location in Ireland eg bottle fair or online) would be best to distribute this.

Do you think many people would trade online or do they prefer to talk to collectors in person to examine the bottles?

    Cheers

Best bet is to create an account here

    http://www.antique-bottles.net/

And simply ask about irish collecting..there are a few people on there from Ireland who should be able to help.

    Hi,
There are a group of approximately 15 bottle collectors who meet about 4 times a year to chat and swap bottles such as ginger beers, creams, whiskey crocks, and match strickers etc. Its a great way of meeting other collectors and adding to your collection. The ABC magazine is definitely worth subscribing to as it features a regular article with photos, about what turns up at our meetings. The Irish article started with issue 46. If your on Facebook, check out 'Irish Antique Bottle Collectors', its just been set up.

Thanks a lot Draper, that meeting sounds like exactly what i'm looking for.

do you have details of when and where the next meeting will be or will this be put on facebook closer to the time.

In order to facilitate the lads from the north and the south, our meetings are held at Fitzpatrick's bar & Restaurant on the Carlingford road about 45 minutes north of Swords. Sometimes lads meet in Swords and travel the rest of the way together. We meet on a Saturday morning from about 11-30 till 2-30. Our next get together will be sometime in February, details will be on the Face book page in the next couple of weeks.

The idea of setting up the face book page is to promote the hobby by enabling collectors to get to know each other and to build on their collections through swaps.

Hi and welcome to the forum Draper. No, nothing wrong as such but a lot of private talk would take away from the actual topic of the thread. That is why I ask you guys to take it to PM (PM = private message). You can click on a poster's name (left side of a post) and a list of possible options will open up. One of them is sending a private message to that poster and you can send messages to each other without anyone else seeing them. Hope this helps.

    Hi
I've been absent from the forum for some time now, but just to let you know that our Antique Bottle Collectors meetings are very much alive and kicking. There are plenty of items for sale or swap such as Codds, Gingerbeers, Minerals, Poisons and advertising etc, enough for everyone to add something new to their collections.

Our next get together at "Fitzpatricks" will be this coming Saturday Sept 7th from approx 11:30am. If your interested in bottle collecting, you can't afford to miss it!
