I think you have to go to FAS, and register through them. But I guess there have been many changes since I got mine.
It used to be you'd approach a garage and ask if they would be willing to take you on for an apprenticeship, then both of you would go through FAS.

Or other routes were to apply to large Garages that advertised for apprentices.

where abouts in the country are you from?,do you have a licencse prefer a clean full and your transport? ,I would advice you look into Enniskillien Skills Centre heres a link¬¬ www.swc.ac.uk so you can attend day release because you need a mininum of 21 hours placement, but you are up against garages laying off people, people maintaining their own vechilces & tractors as all the informaton can be got for free on the internet and manuals can be got quite cheap, even in my job working at my job enquiring how to spefic job e.g brakes, etc but saying that we are busy, hope this wasnt to heavy I have tried to get in atleast 30-50 garages weekly prior getting one and saying that I would not recomned Fas as current ecomate thats why I chose to do day release in Omagh for Diesal Mechanics, hope this wasn't to long but if you need further information PM me
