    hi all,

thinking of getting a compressor for the workshop, its an agri workshop more than a car workshop but the needs are pretty much the same

things i want it to do
    drive a 1/2" and 3/4" airgun
    drive an air greasegun
    pump wheels

    things i need opinions on
how big a tank is recommended
what hp would you all recommend
how much should I expect to pay
will have to get sockets too so again anything to avoid or that you would recommend

    thanks

All depends on the tools and the duty cycle of those.

A 3/4" air gun such as cp6060 will use about 42 cu/ft (~1200liters) a minute at 90 psi to keep up continuously with that you'd need at least a 10hp 3 phase compressor but your unlikely to be using a air gun continuously. The tank acts as a buffer so you can get away with a smaller motor however the pressure will drop as the tank empties so the torque on your gun will fall. Also a smaller motor will run for longer periods to refill a large tank so you have to take into account the duty cycle of the compressor, cheap piston compressors have a duty cycle of as little as 30% - meaning that they are only meant to run for 30% of the time the other 70% they are cooling.

If you had a tyre shop for example with several staff might want a 15-20hp 3 phase 100% duty cycle rotary screw compressor with a 600 liter tank. Thats obviously overkill for a small shop but if you using an air grinder, air sander, shot blaster (and you will once you've tried) if your going to be pumping a lot of tractor tyres you'll get tired of waiting for a 3hp one to catch up *very* quickly.

This twin style is a good compromise and will be about the biggest without going to a 3 phase supply.

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/se29d270-ol-air-compressor/path/professionalindustrial-air-compressors-elect it still won't keep up with the gun continuously but it won't be far behind.
