    Hi all,

I'm up to speed with AceKards for my own kids but a pal just asked me to get his R4i 3DS card working for his own kid. It's identical to the card image in the "Newest WOOD R4 Firmware" at the top of this page http://www.r4ids.cn/r4i-download-e.html

Forgive the ignorance but what exactly am I supposed to load to get backed up ROM's working and movies etc playing? Do I just load the "Newest WOOD R4 Firmware" at the top of the page then Moonshell and off I go?

Do I need to load any of the Patches? e.g. The 3DS V2.2.0-4 Patch for R4i Gold 3DS

What about the "Multimedia Function V151c Firmware?? Where does that fit into the equation?

Appreciate a steer from a more expert modder.

    Ben

You're best steered towards the charter since you mentioned ROMs :)

It's just a generic term for my backed up homebrew games ;) No offence or breaching of rules intended or implied!!!

OK so I went and figured it all out myself

Here's the skinny to turn a new R$i 3DS card from these guys (one at the top of this page http://www.r4ids.cn/r4ids-e.html) and a blank 8Gb SDHC cards into a multi media playing, backed up ROM (homebrew obviously ;)) game playing machine.

    1. Download the latest Wood R4 Firmware from this page http://www.r4ids.cn/r4i-download-e.html - Latest version should be at the top of the page.
    2. Extract/Unzip the ZIP folder to a new folder on your desktop or somewhere you'll be easily able to access/remember it.
    3. Open the Extracted folder and you'll see Icons. One folder called _rpg, an _DS_MENU.DAT file and a WOODR4.NDS file. You'll also see 2 txt files. Delete these so you are only left with the _rpg folder the _DS_MENU.DAT file and the WOODR4.NDS file.
    4. Insert your blank SDHC card into the card reader and insert that into a USB slot on your machine. (If your SDHC card isn't blank do a quick format of it.) If you really want to do this correctly download the 3.0 beta version of Panasonic's software from here http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/index.html. It'll clean up your SDHC card like new!!!
    5. Copy the _rpg folder the _DS_MENU.DAT file and the WOODR4.NDS file to the newly formatted SDHC card.
    6. Copy your homebrew ROM's to the SDHC card.

Now you're in business for playing games.

If my instructions above weren't clear enough, here's a video tutorial ;)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_fGsvVkq88

To watch movies and play music etc you need to install a program called Moonshell and when you want to watch a movie or listen to music you "play a game" called Moonshell which runs a process enabling your DS to run movies etc.

You just need to download the Moonshell 2.0 software from here and follow the installation instructions. http://www.r4ids.cn/r4i-download-e.html

I'd recommend setting up a folder called "Movies" and another called "Music", drop your movies and MP3's in there and off you go.

One thing to note is that movies must be in .dpg format which is a pain in the arse as it means you have to either find .dpg formatted movies online to download or convert your existing movies to .dpg format using either the dpgenc.exe file included with some versions of Moonshell (see http://www.ds-xtra.com/MoonShell for more info) or do a search to download a program called BatchDPG. I think V1.5 or 1.6 is the latest you can get.

    Happy R4i using :D

Fair dues to you Ben.....Give yourself a great pat on the back,,,Well deserved.

For someone to figure it out on their own is a crackin job...

You helped Me out on here just before xmas,,when I was trying to sort out 2 of My kids DSi's..Bought a couple of AceKard 2i's,,and you gave Me fab detailed instructions on how to get them ready to put games onto them.

Followed your instructions to a tee,,and presto,,everything worked first time.

Only have about 4 games on each card for now,,but,,that's not the point...

Well done Ben,,and thanks for the fantastic advice and tips.

Will defo be keeping an eye on your future posts..
