    Hey,

I've a 2008 iMac. I've only 4-6 pin firewire cable, which won't work in the back of the iMac, well, the big bit will, but the small won't - so do I need 6-4 pin in this case? I'm trying to connect to my (2007) Macbook, which can take the big bit, but doesn't have a slot for the small.

Sounds like you have a firewire cable for a camera because there are two types of Firewire cables, 400 and 800.

    This is a 400

    This is a 800

Believe the above is an iLink cable which is the PC equivalent of Firewire

Yeah, the back of the iMac has the 400 connection, but also has an 800, if this is accurate.
ne FireWire 400 port and one FireWire 800 port; 7 watts each.

    The Macbook only has the 400, so I need a 400 to 400 cable - 6 to 6 pin, I think.

They'll have the cable you need in Compu b. you should buy the 9 - 6 pin 800 - 400 firewire cable if your imac supports 800. Only because it will be more useful in the future.
