Calliper dust boots torn

    Hi all,

The wife's mondeo needed brake pads all round, and the disks were all below the minimum thickness so I did those too.

The front went well, but I had a problem with the back. The dust boots on the calipers were very brittle and weak. They both tore quite badly when I use the rewind tool, one is much worse than the other. There was also a few drops of brake fluid came from the left side one as I was pushing back the piston. I hope this was just because of the pressure!

The question I have is, do I need to change them now? I was planning on leaving them in the hope they last a year or so, then changing the calipers with the next pad change. I realise that the pistons are now exposed to water as dirt, so they will seize eventually. Would it be wiser to change out the calipers now and possible save the 100 euro it would cost to replace the pads and disks if the calipers were to seize?

I am a fairly amateur diy'er, so rebuilding the calipers isn't an option really, just fitting reconditioned ones!

Ps, the Haynes manual said to torque the front caliper housing bolts to 130nm. My big torque wrench doesn't fit in the wheel arch, and my small one only goes to 100nm. I struggled to get the 100nm, but got it it eventually. Is it safe to leave it like this?

Chance them now, Its really not worth the hastle in any shape or form having a years worth of crud thrown at exposed parts.

    You will regret it later.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

Do you know of anywhere to get calipers cheaply? Would a pair in good visible condition from the scrap yard be ok, or are these kind of things better new?

Irishauto parts have them listed for the car at 155 per side...i suppose that is reasonable enough.

    What year is the Mondeo?

    2003 1.8 petrol.

You will get them cheaper than €155 per side. Recon units are available for €110 each inc VAT. There will be a surcharge until you return your old calipers. Where are you located?

    Hi George,
Thanks for the reply! I'm in limerick county. I have no problem returning the old calipers to someody, they'd only be getting chucked otherwise!

110 a piece seems good. Better than having the calipers seize and destroy my new disks!

Try a few local motor factors and see what prices they have. I fitted a few of these lately and they are €90 each plus VAT. If you are having trouble getting them at that price in Limerick I am happy to supply them but I am an hour from Limerick City.

    Hey again,

Not having much luck...local motor factors are all quoting between 150 and 165 each inc vat here...

The brakeparts website is out of stock on those ones, so not much good there!

George, im in Newcastle West, working in Shannon...are you anywhere near either of those places?

No I am near Portlaoise in Co Laois.

Why not try breaker yards? I got two for my Laguna (front though) and examined them before handing over money and got them for €25 each. A bit of a clean and small bit of fresh grease and they are perfect since.

Did you have to take it apart for the grease, or just apply it around the piston? I dont mind doing the brakes ect, but taking apart the calipers might be a bit above my level!

No I didn't take the caliper apart. I just put it on the car and pumped the peddle and got someone to watch so I didn't push it out fully and just peeled back the rubber booth slightly and with a small flat screwdriver applied a little grease around the caliper and pushed it back in with a hand clamp. Then I pushed it out and in a few times to make sure it was free.

    no1beemerfan,

thanks for that, rang a local breakers yard and they just took in a Mondeo, said I can have both the calipers for 40 if I give them the old ones to sell on!

Hopefully if the car is just in they wont have been lying around for months, and a straight transfer is on the cards!

Thats good to hear. €40 is an excellent price and as you say if the car has just been got in they should be in decent nick.

When I need something for a car my first port of call is usually a breakers as you can get good parts for very little, sure I only paid €20 for an alternator in 2007 and its still going strong!
