Gaming PC - On the quick

    Hi all,

Normally I would try and steer clear of shop bought machines for gaming but I have limited time here so I figured I would ask.

I'm looking for a gaming rig for around €800 for my nephews birthday. Unfortunately I don't have time to do a build myself (as this has been thrown at me the night before his birthday!)

Does anyone know of any decent gaming rigs on sale at the moment? It doesn't need to be a beast but decent enough to run the newest games at decent quality.

It would need to be available in Cork as well.

    Thanks

You can still build it. I built my pc from scan.cu.uk.

I ordered on Tuesday and got all delivered to co. cork on Thursday afternoon.

You won't get even half decent gaming pc in pc world. It's the matter of price, but the matter of it not being there. Last time I visited pc world it was just stock piled with low range ****y laptops.

IMO go ahead with a build, show your nephew the receipt from the purchase of the parts if you have to. There really is little in the way of gaming desktops from brick in mortar stores and certainly nothing that would do your 800 euro justice. (as far as I know maybe others here know of something)

If he's a gamer, he'll be much happier with a beast of a desktop in a few weeks instead of what will probably equate to a budget gaming PC, tomorrow from any of the shops here.

You are buying your nephew a gaming rig for his birthday? Lucky sod:(

Tbh, You would be doing him a favour if you just told him to hold on a few days while you build him a far better rig that you could of bought, Can't see him being too upset that he doesn't have it for his birthday if he knows the reasons behind it?

Edit: Beaten to the point, I spend far too much time making sure my posts make sense:(

    Short answer: No.

    Long answer: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Seriously though, any PC you get for €800 from a brick-and-mortar place is likely to have a 2TB of hard drive space, 16GB of RAM, a terrible GPU, and a PSU that allows no upgrading what-so-ever. Do your nephew a favour and tell him he as to wait four days, but he'll have an amazing present at the end of it, rather than be disappointed when MW3/BF3, or whatever runs horribly on something you spent a long time looking for.

If you're really stuck have a look on Adverts or something, but again, you're going to be making compromises that will hurt in the long run.

This is kind of what I expected to be honest. I also feel exactly the same way.. i've built my own rigs for the last 10 or so years for that very reason.

Convincing my family of the same thing is the hard part!

They can do some running around tomorrow and see how that goes (don't live in Cork anymore myself). I expect to be on the phone all day.

May end doing the build anyhow.

If you've been building PCs for ten years you know we (and you) are right. Do the kid a favour and build the damn rig for him. Don't let the parents buy some POS (that they're going to come to you in six months with and ask you to "speed up" because it's "getting very slow" anyway).

If your nephew already knows what he is getting you could have a chat to him, Tell him the reasons why it is a bad idea and let him convince whoever told you to buy one that it is a bad idea;)

Have you checked adverts.ie? There are usually a few decent gaming rigs on sale that people have built - obviously not usually as cheap as your own build, but a hell of a lot better value if time is an issue!

Might involve driving halfway across the country though...
