Kimmage was prety fair. No need for a pro sportsperson to fail to notify the drug testers as to where theya re going to be and if they do it's 3 strikes and they are out. Said Cav was in Sicily filming with the BBC and didn't know the schedule and that was his excuse and its fair enough.

Had a little bit of a go at Nadal who said drug tests were an incursion into his private life.

    Pretty much nothing news.

Not quite sure of the point you're trying to make here?

He was criticising an ex-cyclist for criticising a current cylist. You can't throw a stone these days without hitting a metacritic.

A fairly lame excuse - as a professional it's his business to know the schedule.

Do you know where you'll be every single day without exception?
And Could you notify the UCI and UK sport.
Are you sure if you did this for 10 years you would never make a mistake?
Hence its 3 missed tests considered a violation not 1 or 2......

Is this meant to be some sort of dig?

Just listened in on Talkback and Kimmage seemed very reasonable and fair.

On average Cavendish is tested more than once per week! I know it's part of the job but it is understandable that a mistake could be made occassionally! I wonder how many pros have a "miss-free" record?

The system seems very clunky. A smartphone with GPS (or even cell-based) location services could report an athlete's location automatically.

I've been on call 24 hours a day, every day for the past five years. During that period of time I've never been more than 30 minutes from an internet connection. It requires some discipline and puts some limits what I can do, but given that pro cyclists only have to "work" about three hours a day I don't really see that it's such a big deal for them to comply with these sort of arrangements.

Where did you read that? I doubt it's that often.

That would be passive involvement. The athlete could always blame batteries or loss of coverage if they went MIA. They could also say they went out for a 6 hour spin without the phone. It would also be a bit like being tagged.

The text or email means they are actively reporting their location.

Fine, so I would set a calendar reminder every morning to send a text message. It's hardly onerous.

He was tested 62 times last year.
Bear in mind though during stage races the winner and leader are always tested ( in UCI races ).
So as he won 15 + races and wore the leaders jersey at least 5 times that explains some of it.
If you miss a test you are targerted for a while after as well.

Well that's what he claims in this article ..... maybe he's making it up!

To miss one drug test may be regarded as a misfortune; to miss two looks like carelessness; to miss three looks downright dodgy.

Changes have to be notified 12 hours in advance at least.
Also a fixed address has to be give rather than a location.
There was an issue with testers ringing the doorbell and if no one answered was listed as a missed test although the rules have been clarified.
The testers are not allowed ring/phone the person to be tested to let them know they have arrived.

There are a huge amount of carded athletes on 1-2 missed testes both here and in the UK.
To miss one drug test may be regarded as a misfortune; to miss two looks like carelessness; to miss three looks downright dodgy.

Missed tests are considered by WADA to be the equivilent of a failed test. Recently a few have got off due to inadequate notification by the testing authorities so they are far from blameless themselves.

Technically every one with a CI licence can be asked to take a test btw.....

Bear in mind the system has to cater for the whole world, and there are places where the technology is not so advanced

Yeah I would have thought that would drive the number up but i didnt think it would work out to 62 a year. I'll take his word for it though. I tend to believe he is clean.

Whoever tried to take a swipe at PK needs to educate themselves....

He's a very reputable journo - been there done it & is now strong enough to call people out!!

Whereabouts is the best system that can be used... It works imo. This story was released by a journo in Italy who probably had no piece to submit & realised this had legs!!

It should be non-news buts it's Cav, the WC & world's best sprinter.

As said above, 1 to 2 missed tests could happen... 3 is dodgy!!

As far as I know Cav has only missed one test?

To miss 3 in an eighteen month period is a ban I think?

I still think Kimmage, while he is an excellent journalist on most subjects, is just not capable of being objective when it comes to cycling and drugs!

I could start a whole new thead on the problems I've had getting broadband and phone line working simultaneously in an area where mobile signals are distinctly dodgy - that's why I end up doing so much posting during working hours;)

Yes 3in 18 months is deemed a positive!!

Quite true about PK & objectivity...

But given what he has seen, done & knows about the pro peloton - I much prefer reading his version of things than one from a journo trying to keep people sweet.

In cavs book doesn't he mention that he missed two tests before and that the team manager had to take a personal interest to make sure he didn't miss a third. It seems more honest mistakes and forgetfulness than malicous intent.

We (Ci's anti doping officer) nominate events were we want the ISC to test at. Normally out of competition tests would be only carried out on carded athletes or if they are wada/UCI tests then it would be riders from the testing pool for Ireland.

A direct quote from the WADA code:
2.4 Violation of applicable requirements regarding Athlete
    availability for Out-of-Competition Testing, including
failure to file required whereabouts information and
missed tests which are declared based on rules which
comply with the International Standard for Testing. Any
combination of three missed tests and/or filing failures
within an eighteen-month period as determined by
Anti-Doping Organizations with jurisdiction over the
Athlete shall constitute an anti-doping rule violation

Three missed tests constitutes a violation.
