    Hi all,

I'm looking to get a watch bracelet and case cleaned/polished/refurbed. It has some usual wear marks, nothing too deep tho.

Its a brushed stainless steel finish and I'm wondering how expensive is it to get done and is the finish up to manufacturers standard?

    Johnny.

get one of them ultra sonic cleaners, roughly a tenner on the bay, if you are into watches or jewelery go the full hog and let maplin screw you for 35.

The ultrasonic cleaners like Flutered mentioned are pretty good - I got one in an Aldi special offer one time for €20 and I use it regularly.

What brand is the watch you are talking about? You could just ask the service centre what they'd charge to clean & polish it. I can't imagine it would be very expensive, unless you are also looking at a movement overhaul which would vary greatly by brand/value of watch/complication of movement.

Whatever about the bracelet, is it safe to put your watch into an ultrasonic cleaner? I wouldn't have thought it was great for the movement, I've no idea...

An ultrasound bath can damage very thin metal e.g. foil but it won't do any harm to anything solid, in fact its a pretty common way to clean jewelry. The watch would have to be immersed in water though so it would need to have some water resistance.

Since you mentioned it, I've been googling this and can't find any real evidence of risk to a water-resistant quartz watch. Not sure if it's the best idea for a mechanical, mind you.

The cleaner that I bought at Aldi came with a special frame to put your watch on while cleaning. This raises the case off the base of the cleaner, which I think probably reduces vibrations.
