In future do not report an assault if you do not wish to go to court.

Did you receiv any injury? It seems unlikely he would be arrested onthe basis of a "poke". You will have to give a statement retracting your previous statement and give a reason for it.

Why did you report it if you are not prepared to see it through to the end ?
Did you think the Gardai could bring a prosecution without your help ?
    Why waste everyone's time ?

If you make a statement about something and on the basis of that statement a man is arrested and detained but then you retract your statement then you have essentially caused that man to be deprived of his liberty for no reason.

To answer your question yes you can retract the statement. You must contact the station where you made the report and tell them you wish to do so. They will require you to call into the station and sign off on the request. You will then be verbally warned that future statements may be treated with scepticism and you should not waste Garda time.

IMHO your actions are despicable and I have no sympathy for your situation!

It may be useful to talk to a solicitor.
