Not being smart but how long is a piece of string. Impossible to answer unless you give us more specifics. Are you being put on a 3 day week. Do you have an entitlement to jobseekers benefit. You would probably pay less tax prsi and usc. But any jobseekers benefit you get some of it is liable for tax and has to be declared at the end of the year to revenue.

I was just wondering. My Dad runs and oil business and it does be slack for 3 months in the summer. So if I took a job with him , I could be faced with this

Well depends on your age and if you have an entitlement to benefit or allowance.

Ok your in full time work... are you currently working for your father? How many years have you been working for? At the least you can apply for jobseekers allowance and as you are over 25 your parents means will not be assessed. If your days are reduced from 5 to 3 your means from employment will be assessed. You will be able to sign on as a casual worker.

I do not currently work for him. I'm in my current job since June 2010

Well best advice is to cross that bridge when it happens and come back and ask then.

If you are asked to go on a 3 day week, you should ask for written confirmation that this is a temporary measure and that you will be returned to your normal working hours when financial circumstances permit. This will protect any redundancy payments that might arise in the future.

You cannot be forced to take a 3 day week unless it is a term of your contract, or unless it is standard practice in your industry. Of course, if you don't agree to it, you may be made redundant.

If you have the necessary stamps you can claim Jobseekers Benefit for the other days if this happens, and will get 2/5 of the Jobseekers rate which will help offset any loss of wages.

Is there a time limit you can be on casual work dockets (x's and 0's)?
