So has anyone tried Netflix so far?

First month is free. So far for me.

    1. It uses Silverlight, which is as bad as Flash when it comes to OSX. So my fans kick into overdrive after 5 minutes watching anything. So it is for me at least useless on OSX. XBox option I have to buy XBox Live Gold subscription to access it.

    2. On the iPad it works fine.

    3. It went out of its way to try and link to my Facebook account. I had to log out of Facebook just to get it to create an account not using Facebook.

    4. Quality on shows is hit and miss. Movie quality is OK to good. Some of the TV shows are dire. Cracker "White Ghost" for example is unwatchable.

    5. The number of shows/Movies at first looks limited, but it appears it hides a lot of shows in the menu system. So I could find movies from clicking other movies (but not in the menu by default).

    6. Overall there does not appear to be a lot. Maybe 1-2 months of stuff to watch.

Oh and the TV shows seasons are limited in some cases. For example Breaking bad only has two seasons.

One question I had was how many people are allowed share the stream? Can't seem to find the details.

Wow, free movies and TV on the internet!!!!

...wait, isn't this just paying for something that was already there for free but then made illegal and blocked in a half assed easily circumventable way?

You say that as if supporting the people who make the stuff I want to watch is a bad thing.

Apart from some issues one evening with variable quality and glitchy streams, I'm quite liking it so far. The catalogue isn't too bad, and its very responsive on my connection. I mainly watch from the iPad, but will have to set up the PS3 to see what thats like.

Have it up and running on the xbox and no problems so far, pretty decent yeah. That said I doubt I'll keep it after the free trial.

Ok tested, so far you can have two streams at the same time. So thinking about going half on it. So 3 euro a month is not a bad deal.

The shows I like, the majority demographic I am in do not watch TV anymore. So they get cancelled sooner because it looks like no one is watching.

Party Down, Arrested Development are two good examples. Community is on the cusp because of it.

So yea, I have no issues paying for such a service is the price is reasonable.

Yeah I've had it on my Xbox for a few days now and am enjoying it so far.

Decent selection of classic movies and documentarys, last night I watched a documentary called ''The Bridge'' and the film ''In The Heat of The Night.''

No problems in quality streaming wirelessly on my Xbox from my 50mb UPC bb either.

I have tried it on PC, XBOX, PS3 and Android

No complaints. The picture quality is fantastic especially on those with HD. Not tried the 5.1 sound yet though. For €7 per month I wont mind paying it as there is lots of stuff there I will watch and I have no doubt that the selection will grow over time.

I will probably mostly use the service on the PS3 and XBOX 360

When you first get it; it's great and you use it a lot for six months. 2-3 months after that later, you feel like you've watched all the good stuff. Then you spend another 2-3 months trying stuff you didn't really want to see and (mostly) realizing it stinks. Then another 2-3 months and you basically don't use it.

So you cancel because you don't use it.

Then about 3-6 months later, someone else will be talking about Netflix and you'll remember how awesome it was and sign up again. Then you'll watch the handful of new things that came out and the cycle repeats.

That made me smile. Seriously you weren't expecting to have problems on 50mb! ;)
Would kill to have that speed.

No problems on 6mb either. Getting medium HD which looks very good. Never watched Dexter so catching up on that. Its very good.

Nice mixture of old films including westerns and cartoons for the kids. Might just give it a change for a couple months to see if the collection builds.

Enjoying my free trial (remember to cancel after the month or the money kicks in). Nothing I can't get through other channels. But impressive, nonetheless.

Appears to have stopped working. :/ Well that didn't take long.

I'd be up for it if it had somewhere near the selection of movies that a normal video store would have, but the selection is frankly pathetic. Most of the movies seem to be the type you see for £1.99 in garages.

Some day maybe, but not now.

Planning on signing up for the free trial in a few weeks when my exams etc are over. Had a look at the listings, not too bad. And there'll be Arrested Development to look forward to next year.

I've been using it on the 360 since it came out earlier in the week and I've been very impressed. Very smooth and no buffering issues. The interface is a bit primitive and the content is limited but having Arrested Dev. and Twin Peaks available on demand is fantastic. I had a quick zoom through the movies and counted at least 20 I'll watch. Certainly worth the €8 a month fee.

I used the DNS work around Unblock-US to get US NetFlix content and it's fantastic. So many good films and TV shows. I've had no problem with US streams so far. I'll definitely spend $5 a month in a Unblock-US sub when the trial runs out.

The gay and lesbian film section disappeared from the Irish Netflix site. Does anyone know why? It was definitely there yesterday.

Listings are fine, I know you can get stuff free online and the ethics don't bother me. The convenience does, finding working download links takes time, streams are often poor quality and the usual inability to browse through a collection. As is watching it on a laptop or the hassle of porting media files to my media player which is probably full on memory already so needs something deleted or moved to a hard drive.

Its worth 7 euro for a months access basically, and well worth setting up for the free trial.

If you go into taste preferences and click on Cultures in the drop down menu, you'll find it.

This will be perfect for my parents alongside saorview as a sky replacement (they hardly use it) though I'll make sure they have access to the US version as it has more shows and stuff.

Me? The novelty is nice but my media server alongside xbmc is more personal, looks better imo and will only have what I would watch on it. I really think netflix could do with sub user accounts and the ability for each one to hide stuff they'll never watch...

its grand. Not what i was expecting though. I thought it would be like a massive online video shop, but nothing like it. there is good stuff on it but nothing i would have actively seeked to watch. i have 3mb (wimax, utter ****e) broadband though, and there was no problem using it on my ps3, thats the best thing about it!

Defo worth a look for the free trial, but i will not pay a cent for it unless it gets seriously quality shows before the trial is up

It's pretty impressive definitely worth a look I have it setup on the Xbox and iPhone AFAIK your only allowed to stream to two devices at once.

Do Netflix watch figures get considered when counting the ratings of bubble shows?

Is there any word on how often the library gets updated?

Signing up for the trial, do you have to give credit card info?

Yep. Same as LoveFilm and any other sub service like this. Just set a reminder to cancel (if you don't plan on keeping it) a day or so before your trial is up

Really disappointed with their selection of movie & tv. I have a bigger collection in my room. Any word on if/when they'll update their catalog?

me too, my media server has a much much better selection than this and way better quality, some of the tv shows on netflix are unwatchable

    Thanks for the reply.
I think I will be passing on this service myself.

If you dont have a Facebook account how do you sign up? The price is very good.

Really disappointed that so many of the movies are not 5.1. Checked the US site tonight and even a lot of the "new" releases such as True Grit are not 5.1. Thats sort of unacceptable in my opinion.

There should be an ioption for you to sign up with just a regular email account. It let me do it that way.

your right, it's unacceptable in this day and age to not have 5.1 on the movies that have mixes available and even tv shows should have it, most shows for the last several years have surround sound on tv broadcasts and itunes/dvd etc., no reason netflix can't provide them, it's a cheap crappy service at the moment

Ok I'm not the best at computers so this may be a stoopid Q but anyway have NTL 25mb with 500GB fair usage limit. How likely am I to get anywhere near that limit? Fairly heavy on the netflix usage this week.

It would take a lot of viewing to go over 500gb. Ill guess you are safe enough. What is heavy? 5 hours 10 hours?

Thanks. Thought it was a lot but not sure. Suppose about 15hours including weekend.... Maybe same next week. I'm resting an injury! And I've discovered a fair few epic shows too.
