Footballer Sacked for Homophobic comments

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jan/11/oxford-homophobic-tweet-gareth-thomas

Interesting stance taken by Oxford City on this issue. Fair play to them. Like the whole racism issue, there is no place for this sort of attitude in football. It's time the game grew up and moved on.

The pessismist in me wonders would Oxford City have acted the same way if the tweet came from an up and coming 19 year old "star", that may be an asset on the books.

I feel this is a far more difficult subject to try to highlight though, considering the reluctance of players to come out. (They are perfectly entitled to keep their sexuality private, and should be under no pressure to come out).

I also wonder would a bigger club have taken a decision like this? particularily if it was a star player or valuable player??

    Most likely not.

It is something that is going to have to be tackled by the FA/UEFA/FIFA at some stage though and fair play to Oxford City.

I don't expect FIFA to get involved in this particular issue, but a comment condemning this behavior would go a long way to highlight where they stand.

I wouldn't fancy the bed next to Gareth Thomas #padlockmyarse

What a stupid thing to say on a pubic forum

Is that necessarily homophobic though? I would have thought it was more an insinuation that Gareth Thomas was a rapist?

I'm not defending the comment, its clearly insulting, but is it homophobic?

The way I took it is that he was implying (jokingly) that because yer man is gay, he's gonna ride (rape) anything male. Which is obviously homophobic.

"banter" and comments like that are the reason there's no one "out" in the world of football. They deserve to be punished imho.

I wouldn't call that homophobic. Dumb obviously, mentioning homosexuals or homosexual acts isn't necessarily homophobic. Anyway, whatever.

    Yes. Absolutely homophobic.

If Thomas "came out" as a rapist recently, then maybe you could argue it was aimed at that. But he didn't... he openly said he was gay relatively recently, and that's what this moron was clearly referring to.

I think it's brilliant that he was kicked off the team. Whether it's homophobia, racism, or any other kind of discrimination, the player should be sacked from the club and banned for a long long time. Doesn't matter whether it's a fringe player at a small club, or the likes of Rooney, RVP, Lampard, or *cough* Suarez.

A straight-forward no tolerance stance is the only way to wean this crap out of the sport.

Dunno, I guess you could argue that the insinuation is that because Thomas is gay, he would not like to share a bed with him...

A pretty dumb ass insult either way, but then most of this type of behaviour is. I don't know if the chap in question is homophobic, but an acceptance of this type of "banter" only serves to encourage more of the same.

Would he have said it about a straight man? Nope. It's homophobic.

    This guy is 38???? ffs

I would have expected this type of comment from some immature jumped up kid who thinks he "made it" after a few appearences with Oxford never mind an aged professional at the end of his career.

    What an idiot
