as the engine in it is non vtec ????
    thanks.

the EK 1.5 Civic is a SOHC (Single Overhead Cam) vtec system. its a toned down version of the DOHC vtec and in the EK body, has IIRC 110bhp.

the EK also cam in a 1.4 non vtec version.

Yeah i no about al the engine types and so on just the ek3 im trying to pinpoint not sure if its vtec for sure theres no change over as such quick lil motor al the same

110bhp minus ten to fifteen years of dogging wouldn't be much to pull around a civic, couldn't see it being "quick" quick really.

i have never driven a vtec car but it does bug me as to how its hyped as though there could be a distinct wall of incresed power at a certain rpm in a wheezy old civic as if it were turbocharged.

was the 1.5 SOHC vtec not designed for economy not power?

because its a single cam, the vtec cross over isint as noticeable as it is in the DOHC. Still a nippy little car though for what it is.

Prepare to be disappointed if you do get to drive one, they way some people talk about them you expect it to be like a F1 car. Nice engine but not the worlds greatest powerplant.

In your opinion of course ;), where as in my opinion, he wouldnt be dissappointed :D

So thats probly why i dont notice it as much also had a few b16a,s and the power gains wouldnt let you down

agh right, so its the 130bhp version, as thats the engine that goes into the Ferio models (JDM). thats why it feels a bit nippy :D

its the B16a's little brother :D

If it is a Japanese model, it is VTEC engined. There were at least 4 versions of the 1.5 engine in the EK3. It is an excellent engine and if you are lucky, you may have the 3-stage VTEC model. It combines great power with very good fuel economy and it is capable of burning lean fuel/air mixture. Very well engineered motor indeed.
It would be my engine of choice if I was looking for one of these ;).

Does it say vtec on the engine block?
    That's usually a good indication..

On the rocker cover there should be written Honda on it. No indication of VTEC on the cover originally. That is how this engine should look like:

thats the sohc engine you have.

hope you didnt buy that car thinking you were getting a vtec?

plug leads at front = sohc

plug leads in middle(under plug cover) = dohc

I bought it thinking that I am getting a VTEC engine, because it is a VTEC engine (3-stage SOHC VTEC to be more precise) ;).

Some info about that particular version of the engine ;):

OP, if your speedo and the rev counter looks like on the last photo, you have got the 3-stage VTEC engine, D15Z7 / D15B.

They are a fun car to drive and quick for what they are, but anyone that talks it up like a turbo is talking bull, with certain intake and exhaust setups the crossover is very loud, but the more modified race going versions tend to lose the system with "Vtec killer cams" , they are a fun revy engine and once maintained well take dogs abuse all day long, ive done numerous track days and drove all across europe to drive the ring and not one thing has gone wrong, only consumables needed replacing oils filters brakes clutch. Oh and my EK is a 95 and is more or less standard and was rolling roaded in a reputable shop @ 169 , just above factory ;)

Seriously? Now i dont think they are the best thing since sliced bread but they are very fun to drive, out of interest what NA 1.6 or 1.8 would you rate above them only one i can think of is the SR16VE from the N1 but thats barely a production car.Oh and anyone who thinks of the like an F1 engine needs their heads examined :D

Its not a bad engine at all, a nice mix of economy and nippyness, crossover with standard exhaust and intake isnt going to be loud at all, your never really going to have the crossover of a DOHC as the vtec system only works on the intake as opposed to the intake and exhaust on the DOHC. Dont bother with a Vtec controller its not going to do you any favours as its not going to change the air or fuel to match the new Vtec point, infact you might lose power.

Guys in the states go mad for those D series engines, plenty of them running 3-400whp on boosted D series
