MTB Headset noise

Went out for a spin on my mountain bike today for a change and it has started making horrible creaking noises from the headset.
I had this replaced 6 months ago - with no problems - but in the meantime I have brought it home, by air in a box and to do so I took the fork out.
I have only ridden it a couple of times since I've had it home and at the start of my ride I noticed that the headset was loose so I threw some grease in and tightened it all up. It's not loose now but there is a lot of noise coming from it. I think there might be dirt in there, but it looks sealed to me. What is the best way to clean it all and re-grease it all? (ie what could I clean it with)

Clean it out with a good foam de-degreaser, check the bearings for wear&damage, re-grease and see if that cures the noise..

I presume your bike is a Hardtail?

No, its a Giant VT full suspension. I had all the bearings replaced last August as they were shot after 5 years use!
The headset is new so I hope its not damaged, but the noise is definitely coming from there. I'll get some degreaser and see what I can find. Cheers

Ah ok, well in that case I would say you need to check the rear suspension link bearings, esp. if its a new headset then it's unlikely to be the cause..

Depending on useage the linkage bearings on suspension bikes need to be replaced every 6 months under reasonable use...

I assume you have not "tightened up" the cap bolt? If you have, that is probably the cause of the problem ie. you have over-tightened on the bearings. Check out the section on headset adjustment in here.
