MDF window boards

I'm building at the moment and my builder is putting in MDF window boards, these had to be cut to size as he could not get red deal to fit due to the size of the cavity wall and dry lining etc.
Do i need a mdf primer to stop absorption? Can i then varnish it or is painting my only option? I would prefer varnish as it would tie in better with rest of furniture. If i can varnish, do i need a specific one for mdf?
any help and advice welcomed! Thanks
