HP DV6 Overheating

    Hi all.

I have the HP DV6-3180EA laptop (Clicky Clicky)

I'm wondering does anyone have any issue with it overheating?

The fan whirrs loudly ALL THE TIME, it i have it hooked upto the TV, i can still hear the fan from across the room and with the volume turned up.

I've tried tons of things to get it to cool down, only essential programs run at start up, i've de-clogged and de-cluttered it, Compressed air and hoovered the vents but it's still running really hot, as in if i leave my hand at the air vent for 10 seconds, it burns or if i touch the metal side it burns.

I won the laptop from the Intel facebook page in october so it's still fairly new.

Anyone have any advice or should i call HP again?
(had a battery issue before but they sent me a new one)

Something is definitely not right there. That i7 is in idle state (@1Ghz) and it's producing that much heat?

I would definitely contact HP again. The new DV series are all suppose to have what's called Cool Sense Technology (http://h71036.www7.hp.com/hho/us/en/pclc/articles/coolsense-technology.html branding bla bla) But in effect, they are advertised to intelligently cool your laptop, that seems anything but.

It could be a few things, for example the GPU could be running flat-out all the time, which will have the effect of raising the CPU temp as well.

On the software side I would just update GPU drivers, check HPs page for any bulletins or hotfixes. Use more in-depth monitoring of the CPU and GPU to try and see if something is running flat out when it shouldn't. Apps like MSI Afterburner will show you what frequency the GPU is running at. Run a full virus scan with a reputable antivirus.

If you've narrowed down that it's not a software problem, then I would just call HP. If it's under warranty there's no sense in looking at things like the heatsink or thermal paste yourself.

Thanks for the advice guys, Just got home so running the antivirus and gonna update all the drivers now, will post back if it solves anything.

Any other advice would be appreciated as i don't think it's a software issue myself but kinda hoping it is.

The CPU is idle, it's most unlikely the CPU is heating it up (how, through the shared heatsink? :D)

    +1

Sound advice. If the CPU was heating up from day one at idle and the fans are working as they should, my first guess would be that the CPU is not transferring heat onto the heatsink properly. Lifting the heatsink, cleaning and reapplying good thermal paste will probably fix it, but you'd be mad to while the machine is under warranty.
