If you're buying new, it's probably best to look around and see if an Irish RFD can get it for you.

If you do want to import, it is much easier to pay a local RFD to take in in for you than do the paper work yourself.

the hard thing you will find buying form the uk is a dealer willing to export it . it can done though as i bought a rifle i was after from the uk. but i had a bit of hassle with the english dealer.

I imported my 10/22 from a private seller in the UK. I saw the rifle in a 'for sale section' on a UK forum. It was very easy to do it .

First off you have to have a license here to import it yourself and get the import license. I did it all through my friendly dealer here. Sellers UK dealer would not export but my dealer had a dealer contact in Northern Ireland that would do the trade.

This is how it was done.
Seller took his rifle to his local dealer (no ex/import license required) who sent it on the the Northern Ireland dealer (who got the export license to send on to my dealer), who sent it to my local dealer (import license). All at my cost, about €90. Took 3 weeks and I had my sub .22 license sorted in the meantime.

If the UK dealer will get the export license then he can send to your local dealer direct.

+1 to Clivej's reply! Its not that difficult and that is the route to take. The UK RFD will not send it direct though, it will have to go to the north; something to do with the fact that the couriers will not ship firearms direct from the UK mainland to Rep Ireland! I brought in an AYA no2 shotgun this way during the summer and it was very straight forward. The only cost was the carriage and any handling fees the rfds may look for!

+1 on going through the North. I cancelled a sale with a lad in the UK last year because he was farting around with shipping costs etc. I went with another lad in the end who sent the rifle to the North.

John Lambert organized everything for me on this end; including the import license and the dealer up north. You might give him a ring if you are near to Wexford.
