OK, so I'm going to look at a car on Friday and it is advertised at 8K.

I have a '00 Scenic with no NCT, 108K on the clock, dodgy electrics and in bad need of an exhaust, (a piece of crap) to trade in.

The car I'm looking at has just over 100K but needs it's timing belt done. It also has a bit of cosmetic damage to a door.

What do you think would be a good price for me to get this for?

Also, realistically, what would he get for my Scenic? Is it worth any thing to him?

One last thing, does a wad of cash carry more weight than writing out a cheque?

What's the make/model, year and mileage of the car you are looking at?

You dont say what you are buying. It could be mad overpriced or very keenly priced.
I wouldnt bother trading that scenic. Go in for a straight sale.

It depends how competitively he's priced the car he's selling.

I would like to get shot of the Scenic at this stage so if I could get a few quid off the one I'm looking at, well and good.

I have less barganing power with a straight sale, no?

Also look at SEAT Alhambra and Ford Galaxy, they're the same car.

You have FAR MORE bargaining power going in without your trade in and with cash.

If you trade in your car the trader just has to get rid of it, and it's not worth anything to anybody apart from a scrap dealer perhaps.

Cash is king, and dealers love to see straight sales (no trade in) coming through the doors, it's far less hassle for them.

So use this to your advantage, and drive a hard bargain. It's a buyers market, and you hold all the cards.

More actually, as the seller still has to turn your trade in into cash.

    Thanks for that.

If I didn't trade it in, where would I get a few quid for the Scenic and how much could I expect to get, 1 or 2 hundred?

Timing belt and cosmetic damage? What's the NCT status? If it's an 05 then it's either got a fresh one or none?

I'd look to either get him to do the belt, and repair the door or look for a discount.

Wouldn't bring that scenic in at all like the others have said.

See what a scrapyard will give you for it?

You coud try the one at Pinnock Hill near Airside there between the airport and Swords, or else Summerhill Spares in Coolock Ind. Est. but I'm not sure if they take cars in.

You'd be talking a couple of hundred euro max I reckon.

There is a guy in balbriggan, for the life of me I can never remember his name but he will probably give you a fair price for it

Other than that, there are three on the way to Coolquay, and one on the old airport road on the way to Swords

You are probably looking at 1-200e at the most?

I'll try for a cash sale I think and just scrap the Scenic later on.

If I get 150 for it and a good price on the 'new' car I'll be a happy man.

    Thanks again.

Why not stick the Scenic up for €500~ on Donedeal and see if someone bites? Wortha shot before sending it to the scrapyard.

If you manage to sell the Scenic privately then your only reason for buying from the trade is gone. Do yourself a big favour and buy privately - it's a lot safer.

You'll get nothing with a personal cheque. Bank draft or cash are the same thing.

There are risks buying private and dealer. At least with a dealer you've some comeback and a warranty. Buying private you're on your own.

Saying that buying private is safer is a dangerous lie.

    That's the legal theory :)

Me, I'd much rather be on my own with a car that my trusted mechanic had a quick look at. Even 15 minutes. It will cost ya nothing or very little and it will tell ya a lot.

You should be getting a car inspected regardless of who you are buying off. A 2nd set of eyes will spot issues you miss as you want to buy the car.

Not necessarily, if a Dealer has a car I want, and I think it's a good enough price, it's reason enough for me to buy it.

Regarding whether 'it's a lot safer' to buy privately, I'll take that with a large grain of salt.

    But thanks for your input!

I might give this a bash if I don't get a Trade in, I'll see how it goes with the Dealer...

Wow €8k for a 7 year old Ford Galaxy VW Sharan(presumably TDI) that has 102k miles and some cosmetic damage?Sounds a bit pricey to me...

Something like this could be an option

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Ford/Galaxy/1.9-D-ZE/413258394513710/advert?channel=CARS

Has 6k more miles than the VW and is the same car. Just costs €3k less. Also get the dealer to run it through the NCT again and you have a two year NCT and warranted car for €3k less.

I remember viewing that ad very recently, the only thing that put me off it was that it showed as having 9, yes 9 previous owners.

Curiously, it seems to have gone down to 0 previous owners now for some reason.

I suppose 9 owners is a bit much but look over the service history and it might be a good buy if it's all there. I mean a €3k difference is not to be sniffed at, might be worth a visit anyway. It is the same car as the Sharan. The seat covers would make me question the condition of the car overall though.

I should say I do not know the seller/dealer or the car in anyway.

I would ask myself very carefully why that car has plastic leather seats?

Where do you usually find such seats?
