just got a tee time for Portmarnock.

Definitly the best value of all the opens IMO

I'd like to play the day in Killarney but don't think I'll be able get that Friday off work. Will try play one of the summer dates.

What's the story with these "open" competitions and why are they so expensive? Very little information on their website apart from the venues and prices. €75 to play the Montgomerie course in Carton in April is bad enough but then Castleknock in July is a crazy €65. I'd quite like to play Killeen Castle but not for €90.

Just booked a tee-time for Portmarnock. Never played one of these before so would be interested to hear about them from somebody who has played in them before. Should be fun I hope.

It's Portmarnock Links which they are charging a premium for.

You'd be amazed the amount of people that confuse them, great track in its own right.

Premium prices for all of these. Portmarnock Links can be played for €45 in a weekly open comp, on a Tuesday I think. The rest can all be played for cheaper as a green fee. The general principle behind most open competitions, as run independently by the clubs themselves, is that they will be at a cheaper rate than a normal green fee.

Yea I agree it's a great track. To confuse things even more, would I be right in saying that thats a picture of Portmarnock GC rather than Portmarnock Links thats on the golfdigestevents website?

Hard to tell, looks like it could be the 12th green (index1) at the links. Too small an image to be sure.

I played both of the first two events and have only good things to say about them. A very well stocked goody bag on arrival, then to the first teebox, where you are announced over the loudspeaker, very "The Open" like, I can still hear it now, "And on the first tee, from ***** golf club, mister back9bandit. From there it is free fruit and drinks every 3 holes and a mega burger and drink once you have completed the first 9 holes. The events are quite expensive relative to open singles fees but the prizes and the whole atmosphere more than makes up for it. There are three categories, handicaps up to 13 and handicaps over 13, oh and the ladies of course. First and second prizes in each category. G20 drivers for first, 2 cleaveland wedges for second. 2 long drive prizes of a Seiko watch each. 4 nearest the pin prizes, weekend in Farnham Estate for 2, weekend in carton House for 2, a Golfglider electric trolly and a set of Cleaveland CG16 irons.
I was pipped for the irons in Portmarnock but am now the proud owner of 2 cleaveland wedges, courtsey of a scratch free 37 points in Killarney.
I would encourage anyboby thinking of going to one of these events to give it a go.
I would also like to thank John,Mike,Tom,Denis and Jem for the fivers.See ye all in Cahir in the morning. I forgot to get change so bring the exact fivers for me.Hahahahahahaha.

    Thanks for that bandit !
Sounds really cool alright and I'm tempted to have a go - just for the experience. Although you'd want to be pretty confident on your drive on the first with the starter there after announcing you and everything !

Savage prizes for the closest to the pin ! 2 cleveland wedges for comming 2nd but a whole set for closest to the pin ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 134 ✭✭Back9bandit

Ya €200 for second in category and €400ish for nearest the pin. But its all about the glory. I forgot to mention that the category winners go to a Grand Final later in the year. A great experience AND you need balls like a Bengali tiger on the first tee with your buddys and the next fourball on hand with their I phones.

Am I right to assume, these are usually played off the back sticks? Heading to Carton house and trying to get my head around the distances..
