No, they also dip diesel cars, otherwise there would be mass tax evasion. Anytime I've been pulled over at an excise checkpoint when driving a car that could be petrol or diesel (e.g. VW Golf) they look at the back of the car to see the model number and then wave me on when they see it's a petrol engine.

And I think it's the Customs and Excise people who do the dipping, the Garda are just there to pull people over and keep some order on the proceedings. I don't think the Gardai have the equipment to dip and they probably aren't familiar with the fines that can be imposed on the spot, the C & E people do all that at the roadside.

    It's a C&E matter, not criminal.

Are you not open to criminal conviction if prosecuted?

Then I lend my diesel car to someone and he/she fills it up with petrol? No thanks.

They may have opened the filler flap to check, I can't remember.

I'd say most Gardai would know a diesel from a petrol purely from the sound of the engine. No amount of badges can cover up the sound of a diesel :p
But its always worth a shot you might get one with 'limited' motoring knowledge.

Enter the highly capsulated CDTI Honda engine. Quieter than a petrol.

Gardai are not interested in this kind of work and indeed with staff reductions etc I am sure they would resist having to do it. :P That green diesel thing is a joke and should be changed to a new system of rebates for those using agriculture. The guy who is driving on green is not a major problem it's the guys who are laundering and selling the laundered diesel. These are the ones the customs should be watching ;)

The Garda sees you coming, he's in front of you so can't hear the exhaust, he waves cars that might be diesels into the layby where the C & E people are operating and he stays standing beside the main road. It doesn't really come down to the sound of the engine because if you have a properly serviced car with a half decent exhaust they can't distinguish the sound of your engine from the dozens of cars and trucks whizzing past on the motorway.

It's perfectly valid for them to pursue both the suppliers and the users.

If you don't pursue the users it makes life a whole lot easier for the suppliers because if there is no risk associated with using the stuff the suppliers can charge a whole lot more and even more people would be at it.
