Glitchy streaming with xbox but not with archos- thoughts

Have an old laptop upstairs hooked up to an external drive for streaming mp3s and movies round the house.
My usb drive is F:\ which I have shared out

Have an ARCHOS wifi media player downstairs under the telly (picked up on ebay for 100e 4 years ago, great little yoke), with the archos I can navigate to the F:\ share on my network and play any of the files glitch free.

I can stream with either WMP or tversity, point the streamers at F:\ and the archos picks up the streams no matter which stream it comes from, and plays glitch free.

So then the kids get an xbox 360 for xmas, its sitting under the telly beside the archos, should have the same media playing capabilities as the archos, set it up on the my network, sees my shared files and plays them, also sees the streams and plays them. Only both methods are very glitchy, cant get a minute without it pausing for a few seconds. I dont get this with the archos.

    thoughts?

archos has superior buffering, error handling or wifi then the 360?

Quite likely, people never gave Archos credit but they were years ahead in terms of streaming on a portable device.

Is it possible that your server is transcoding stuff on the fly? And maybe it is giving a high-bitrate stream to the Xbox compared to the Archos?
