    We have problems getting broadband and what else is new!! I rang about satelite broadband but I'm not sure about the allowance bit. I like to use internet for 'how to' videos like cooking and at the moment trying to learn how to use a pottery wheel. My daughter likes to listen to music online and buy music from itunes. I rang a company and asked about 10Gb but I am not sure how much viewing time we will get in a month, i don't understand still about GB and it seems expensive at 50 euro. Maybe someone might be patient enough to explain. if this is not the correct forum maybe guide me to the appropiate one as I am new. thanks

    What part of the country are you in (no need to be too specific).

    Satellite broadband should be a last resort,the allowances are pitiful and ping times are through the roof so forget about using it for voip or gaming.

    Try looking for a fixed wireless service,here's a list of a few.There's more out there which aren't on the site but google will find them.

    If you are getting monthly usage allowance of 10GB i don't think in this day and age this is enough for a family. It may be if you monitor it closely which you can with software. But if you are already watching videos and children downloading music they will soon be downloading videos etc. But if it is your only option you may have no choice.
    Have you tried three.ie and their modem
    link here http://shop.three.ie/catalogue/products/view/huawei-e586-mifi-white/50968/T010019
    you get 60GB for €30 and you can take the modem with you anywhere and connect. You can check on their website for coverage in your area and youe local three shop will advise also. Hope this helps. Maybe start with the 15GB package and see how you go if you monitor your usage.

    Think of GB as KG except instead of weight you are talking amounts of data
    1gr = 1KB 1000KB in a MB
    1KG = 1MB
    1Ton = 1GB 1000MB in a GB
    now you need to relate this to the amount of data in an GB

    A normal DVD would be about 4GB

    A normal Music CD might be up to 1GB approx 5 - 10MB per track so 10 x 10MB tracks = 100MB so if you downloaded 10 music cd's (10x100mb) in a month you have used 1GB

    Hope i got the above right for you maybe someone else can give an easier explanation

    If you are in an NBS area the 10Gb Satellite package is a lot cheaper. You must be in an area marked green on this map below (zoom right in) and you must order through Three.

    Just want to say the lads hear are giving you accurate advice, they know the story. My sister tried a satellite broadband tooway I think and skippy is right the kids burn up the allowance in no time, if 4gb is like a DVD well you can only watch 2 DVDS IN A MONTH!!(I think) for 10 GB and they will hold you to a contract so you're stuck for a year. She was told she'd get x hours for XGB but it varied all the time depending on who you asked, Beware, beware they are not going to spell it out for ya too easy. Satellite + broadband not 2 words you want to see together, you'll be robbed and ripped off and left to pay a huge cancellation fee or stuck with them for the term of the contract.

    Thanks for your replies. Thanks Skippy for explaining this for me, 4GB is about the same as a DVD......WHAT! Surely this is a scam, my gran would use this in an evening! Is this LEGAL! What family in 2012 would only need this much viewing time, you tube is the internet as far as I am concerned! I suppose you need to pay more and more for extra time, this is a joke surely? So 10 GB is only about 2 DVDs! No, this is robbery, I think I'll stay well away and do without rather than be scammed. Is comreg ok with this allowance on satellite broadband?

    Comreg simply don't care about consumers and never have, no matter what nonsense they come out with on the issue.
    Their only interest is that companies pay their fees so they simply have no interest in upsetting that stream of income.

    Bealtine is dead on about Comreg, I made the mistake of ringing and basically 'why would you be asking about how much download allowance you might have because it is an impossible question to answer and there is no way whatsoever to measure/monitor your usage of satellite broadband............very knowledgable and so helpful too. Yes I noticed a satellite broadband company (onwave, the one on Newstalk) could tell you different amount of 'viewing time' you have for 10GB 'over the phone' I was told 39 hours in a month..........for 10 GB
