Beginner 10k training

    Hi,

    I'm looking for some advice on doing a 10k

    First of all some background. I've been doing something similar to C25K for the past 6 weeks and have built up to doing a very slow jog. For the past week or so I've been doing around 5k in 40 - 45 minutes. I was probably quicker when I had the walk breaks :o! The first 10 minutes or so always seems harder but then I seem to settle down and it becomes easy. I jog 3 times a week, and on non-running days I cycle or walk. I also do yoga several times a week. I take one day off from everything where I do nothing more strenuous than a bit of housework or gardening.

    I'm interested in doing the Great Ireland Run on April 15th and I'm wondering if that is too soon for me? I know I could walk it as I've walked 10k several times recently but I would love to run it.

    If it's a doable goal, could anyone point me at a training schedule (preferably in km not miles)?

    My main goal is not to injure myself. I'm so excited to have found something I love doing so I don't want to have an enforced break cos I overdid it. I keep reading about overtraining and that the tendons,bones etc take longer to adapt to running than the heart and lungs but I don't know how to tell if I'm overdoing it.

    You'll breeze it if you stick to this. Put injuries to the back of your mind - there's more talk about them than anything else and you'd be unlucky to pick up more than aches and pains at your level.
