Yeah, just installed it here, on first look it looks really nice, they seem to have wrung some extra functionality out of the already excellent develop process, the maps module is a useful addition and softproofing should be nice too.

    Received this email today

Announcing the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 beta

The Lightroom Team is excited to introduce the Lightroom 4 beta – and to have experienced customers like you try it out, give us feedback and play an important role in developing an outstanding finished product.

Here is a sampling of what you can do with the new image processing capabilities in the Lightroom 4 beta.

Bring out detail in highlight and shadows.

Create photo books using automatic layouts, or select from a variety of page layouts for a custom design.

Find, group and display images by location.

Easily organise, view and edit video clips.

Use new local editing tools for white balance, noise reduction and moiré.

Ensure more accurate colour in your prints and online images with soft proofing.

This is just a sampling of the power and creative options you'll gain with Lightroom 4 – so don't miss out on this opportunity to download the beta.

You can also help the team by sending us feedback through the Lightroom 4 beta Forum on Adobe Labs. After all, Lightroom was designed for photographers, by photographers, and we value and appreciate your comments.

Thank you for your interest and participation.

Can you bring your existing LR3 catalogue in handy enough and do you have to uninstall LR3 to use it?

You can install it alongside LR3, but it requires its own catalog. I think because it's a beta they don't want it potentially messing up your current working catalog. It was the same with the LR3 beta.

Can anyone confirm that before Lightroom 3 because available there were 2 beta copies released?

Yes, I'm pretty sure that was the case.

Lightroom 4 Beta may require the Photoshop Camera raw plug-in version 7.0 for full compatibility.

Yesterday when experimenting with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Beta came across this issue when attempting to edit LR4 camera raw image file in Adobe Photoshop CS5.

    This window was displayed:

    lightroom4betacameraraw.png

    Came across following advice HERE:
Since LR 4 is in beta, this version of ACR is not available for Photoshop so choose the Render using Lightroom option. Now LR4 Beta will render the file and hand it off to Photoshop with all of the changes you have made in LR4 Beta."

    Worked for me.

Was thinking this but wasn't sure if its limited to existing LR users or available to all.
So if i download the beta now and then buy it in April, what happens the beta version i've downloaded? Does it just expire and disappear?!

The beta version will expire (you'll probably have to uninstall it), when you buy version 4 it'll install and import your catalogue from the beta version, it should be a seamless transition.

Just wondering if anyone has any feedback on this?

I haven't tried it, so am curious for people's honest views.

Paul, I haven't used it as much as I would normally have, but I did run a few "difficult" images through it and I have to say I was impressed with the new version of the processing engine, highlight recovery and pulling out detail in shadow areas seemed to me to be to give much more satisfactory and natural results.

The feed back on some forums that I saw was that the processing features were mostly complete but that some performance optimization still had to be finished.

The books module wont be a big thing for me but the mapping module should be useful as long as it stays responsive once lots of images have been added.

Looks to me as if it'll be an upgrade I'll be willing to spring for.
