This is really upsetting news. She did some great work in exposing both Church and State in their abuses and failures. Only a young woman too. We could do with more journalists like Mary.Alas I can't think of any.
    Really sad news.

Sad alright. Someone for whom the title journalist was a very good thing. All too rare. RIP

RIP. I worked in the refugee/asylum area some years back and let's just say she kept us on our toes, which is what a good investigative journalist should be doing.

    AH fcukwittery at its worst.

    RIP

Anyone know why Ivan Yates kept calling her Mary Rafferty?

Because he's a thoughtless insensitive idiot? Like the funny poster above?

Mary Raftery was a writer & film maker of great integrity whose work in written word & television brought many any important issue to the public eye. Her book, "Suffer the Little Children", on the abuse of children in the Irish childcare system led to the establishment of The Commission to Inquire in into Child Abuse.

She was a well liked as a person & widely respected for her work.

Christ, 54 is way too young to die.

Even still, she covered alot and was a big help. A rare journalist who was worth her weight.

A journalist who actually did her job and did it very well. She spoke about the unspoken and revealed the darker side of this nation. She destroyed power clique that held sway until she exposed them. RIP Mary, we can only hope that others will follow in your very big footsteps.

One of the few in Irish journalism, who actually held the bad guys to account.

    RIP.

RIP - a rare example of everything a journalist should be. I hope they re-screen all of her programmes soon, she held up a mirror to the Irish public, the state and the church, and we didn't like what we saw.

States Of Fear, what I was able to watch of it, was incredible stuff - she did very valuable work.

We've lost a very powerful voice countervailing the ongoing effort by the Catholic Church to rehabilitate its image, dissimulate, deflect and try and convince everyone that it's not as bad 'as all that'.

e.g. Sure, doesn't 97% of abuse take place outside of clerical circles? Yes. It does. And yet no violent or abusive father or mother claims to be offering salvation from sin and moral example to the whole world.

She'd have never let them forget what took place in the name of God.

Mary Raftery is a huge loss to investigative journalism. A woman of great integrity, fearlessness and grit who exposed some of the evil perpetrated on defenceless citizens of our country. It is tragic to see her die at such a young age when she still had so much to give. Thank you Mary, and may you rest in peace.

lets not get carried away..they had some bad apples but if we are gonna kick the catholic church out of ireland it wont be because we want another
'better' one to move in. If the Catholic Church in the face of all the new faiths entering Ireland wishes to rehabilte their image I support that..they're not all pedos..the post in the greece post re priest taking in foster kids was absoultly disgusting..how far will we beat ourselves into the ground?

in inspiration to many even now, I think as a mark of respect we should run a " mary and her prestigious work " thread, not to lick upto her, but more to enjoy the fruits of her labour ( and who doesn't enjoy a good oul' read ? )
