I saw on the text service about Science News (Page 154 for the index if it is still there) That Nasa have appointed a former astronaut to head up the project for a starship.

Yes I blinked too. A Starship???

This is akin to ESA drawing up grand plans for a manned mission to Mars without every even having put a man in orbit.

It's the 100 year starship program. How it works is live this.

Step 1: Set up 100 year starship program.
Step 2: Give them a few quid.
    Step 3: ???????
    Step 4: Starship.

What an insane waste of cash in fairness.

NASA have given half a million towards this and DARPA a million further.

I actually think this could work. There are plenty of billionaires who are donating all or vast amounts of their money to worthy causes. If a few take an interest in this and believe in the cause, it could bring in a lot of money.

As far as I am aware the idea behind this is not to build or even design an actual starship. Rather the plan is to figure out whether it would be possible to create an organisation with persistent investment, which could last for 100 years and support the development and deployment of such a starship.

They are investigating creating an organisation that could then create starships. Some day.

Step 3: wait 200 years cos the republicans spend all their budget fighting in wars in the middle east 200 years earlier?
